Stealership just keeps on stealing

Ok so I went into my local Toyota dealership (Lake Charles Toyota) to drop my truck off to get the belts changed. And they came out with a list a mile long. Does anybody else have that problem with their dealership? I went in and paid $155.28 for the 3 drive belts to be changed. If I would have bought all the things they recommended me to replace I would have spent $3100.

Here is what they recommended me do:
replace timing belt, water pump, thermostat, gasket, and coolant - $939.64
replace valve cover gaskets, upper and lower intake gaskets, both cam plug seals, spark plugs, and pcv valve - $783.40
need to perform fuel system service - $316.05
need to flush power steering system - $108.40
need to replace both wiper blades - $46.45
need to replace 4 tires with goodyear wrangler tires - $761.82

Does any of this really NEED to be replaced or are they just finding every little thing to get more money?? They said my water pump was leaking but I didn't get to see the leak. The truck drives fine but I still want to get like another 130,000 miles out of it. It has 77,608mi right now.

 

WOW, I thought I had probs with the stealerships. With the mileage you have on the rig, and without looking its hard to say whether you "NEED" most of those done. The majority of the items can be done by you with a basic 110pc Craftsman mechanic tool set, on the side of the street...(if you dont mind getting dirty). You would save yourself about 75% of that cost by doing it yourself. Dealers mark up the part cost A LOT, and the labor rate here around Cincy is $92 an hour. That adds up real quick and is the majority of your cost. Good luck.

 

I know man. I could get some really nice RainX wiper blades for less than that.

 

timing belt and water pump will be due at 90k, but since your truck is 13 years old, I would look into getting that stuff done very soon.

 

My last Toyota (88 4Runner) went close to 300,000 miles and still ran like new when i sold it. The only thing from your list i did was replace the wiper blades, tires, and plugs.

I mean I might be able to understand one or two things. But $3100 worth of stuff!! Is my stealership the only one that does this?

 

haha, have you ever done maintenance on this thing? you are right about where you should be doing a timing belt. ever had the fuel filter changed?

there is $939 for timing belt etc, thats normal, and yea, do it.
$761 for tires, if your tires are getting bald, it's pretty easy to know, you need new ones. so your looking at $1700 for just those things, the bill doesn't seem that crazy to me, seems like the truck has been neglected and your paying for it now.

 

I don't see the big deal .

They recommended stuff to be fixed on your 13 year old truck , and you decided what you would have them fix .

Not everything have to be done in one go, but yeah, given the age of the truck, they are typically necessary maintenance.

 

Find an local independent Toyota garage, show them the list you got from the dealership.......go from there

And I hope they don't honestly think I am going to pay $50 for wiper. That's a joke. I think I'll change them myself for about $25 and 3 spare minutes.

Flush power steering system? I have no idea how to do that but it doesn't sound too bad. Maybe I can find a step by step guide on here.
