78k, you're getting close to time to change the timing belt, but you're not there yet.

When there, yes... timing belt, water pump (sure, it'll last 130k+, but are you willing to bet that it'll last to your 2nd timing belt change?) thermostat, all hoses and belts, coolant....

But the dealer is trying to rape you.

To change the water pump, the timing belt has to be removed.
There should be no separate labor charge for that.

Find a different dealer for ALL of your service.

 

Your '88 didn't have a timing belt.

 

Agreed, they shouldn't charge labor to remove and install the water pump since it is already off when doing the timing belt. In fact it might be illegal to do so.

 

That's about $300 high.
The belt, water pump, hoses, serp, and coolant can be DIY for about $350 in parts.

And the Toyota dealer is the best place to purchase tires?

 

I hated working at the dealership, they would make us service advisors recommend everything to the customers, and make us charge labor for everything, even wiper blades and you can do most of that yourself. I quit working there, it's ridiculoushow much they charge for simple shit. And labor was 110/hr, but they make us charge the customer 115/hr yep...eff those guise

 

Discount tire is the best, besides I bet those 800 bucks were for p rated tires, cheapest ones and stock size. I got my 10ply dynapro for 800 OTD. Rape I tell you

 

I hate that. I don't need to be shown my air filter. I generally replace them at double the recommended interval... they are ALWAYS very clean.

But the minimum wage employee at Iffy Lube dicks around with my airbox, removes a perfectly good filter, and brings it into the waiting room to show me, and say something inane like "It's not too bad but you'll need a new one before next time" while showing me a filter with 500 miles on it.

There's more than one reason I haven't been to Iffy Lube in almost 15 years other than when the contract on my company car required it.

 

Not too bad actually. After being a territory rep for Goodyear, a lot of time car dealers will use tires to get people in the door and they can have pretty good prices. They are lucky where they have the purchasing discounts based on all of the purchases from Toyota dealers around the country so they get them fairly cheap.

I agree 100%, I'd never go to iffy lube for an oil change, way over priced and unskilled laborers wrenching on truck!

 

Ya, depending on the tire, $761 is not totally unreasonable if that is OTD.
California sucks... between the recycling fees and hazmat fees and taxes and all of the other shit (including a non-optional $15 road hazard), the $99 Firestone 215/70-15 that I bought the other day cost me $156 out the door.

 

At $100/hour for labor, 3-4 hrs work I'd assume, plus they are a business, and are going to make some money on the parts, it's really not that bad. considering you have a toyota certified tech working on your vehicle, and using all genuine parts, rather than shopping around to find all the parts, and then a day of your time, plus buying special tools to get the job done, and considering OP doesn't know what a power steering flush is, I highly doubt he is in any position to do those things by himself. On top of the massive time and hassle savings, if you have an issue, the dealer will warranty their parts and work, if you do the job yourself, you've got nothing.

you are also comparing your car sized tires, to truck tires of a different brand. I'd love to only pay $761 for tires, mine are bigger, and they are bfg a/t's so not a proper comparison, but I paid $1200 for my tires, and installed and balanced myself..

 

Then they don't get the airbox back together properly and your perfectly good filter is no longer doing its job.

 

I bought my parts from the Toyota dealer.
The truck had 100k on it, I had no warranty on the truck, and the parts were covered by whatever warranty Toyota provides for parts.

Before I did the job, I got quotes for the complete job from 4 different dealerships. Two tried to fuck me by charging full labor for both the belt and the pump. Two were fair and only quoted one labor charge, but I decided to DIY and save the labor, even though I paid slightly more for the parts.

3-4 hours? I did it myself using hand tools in 6 hours. 2 hours of that was waiting for my wife to drive to my office (I was doing the work in the warehouse), pick up the incorrect serp belt, take it to the dealer and exchange it, and return it.
I had never done it before.
I could probably do it again in 3 hours with hand tools... the dealer techs do this all the time and have much nicer tools and facilities.


And it would have cost me the entire day anyways since the dealer with the best price (and the one I bought the parts from) was 40 miles away and my wife had obligations... I would have had to take the truck in at 7am, then sit in the waiting room until it was done. Waiting for a service bay and everything else, it likely would have been an 8-10 hour day.

 

So the water pump just falls out when you remove the timing belt? The vehicle retains the coolant? you guys must be totally ignorant as to what else is involve besides removing 8 bolts. Drain coolant, remove water pump, clean up gasket surface, install water pump, fill cooling system, bleed cooling system. You are only paying an extra hour for this and you believe you are being raped? and the guys bitching about the cost of wiper blades you are paying 0.1hr per blade, 90% of the time it takes us that long to get the parts person off their ass to go get them. Do you goto work to not get paid? Didnt think so neiter do we.

 

exactly... the dealer isn't going to rush the job to do it in an hour so that they can save you a buck. all of their times are book times, not just randomly selected, I'm sure they book 3 hours minimum to do the job, your saying you took 4 hours of work with hand tools, I'm not sure if you think they have robotic tools, but they use hand tools too. so like I said, even if they book 3 hours, you're spending over $300 just for labor. and what "rushr" said is exactly right, they are there to turn a profit, did you not know this before you went into their business?

IMO... many folk should not own vehicles...
especially if they can't afford 'dem or don't know squat. (majority of women folk comes to mind)

Say... if your body were falling apart... or you lost 6 pints of blood...
and it cost too much to repair... would that get ignored too ?

The longer ya put maintenance off... the more it's going to cost ya.

The timing belt needs to be removed to replace the water pump.
There is ZERO additional labor to change the timing belt beyond the effort to bring up the part number on the pick sheet when the parts for the water pump are ordered.

I'm not saying the water pump should be "free" labor... I'm saying that it is outright theft to charge 3 hours labor to change the water pump and to charge an additional 3 hours labor to change the timing belt on the same work order.
