This is also a good point! Maybe we should measure miles per dollar instead of miles per gallon?

Shit like this makes me rub my face.

Diesels do typically offer better mileage, yes. They also have their disadvantages. Which is "better" you can decide.

Try under 4 gallons for a 8000 lbs full sized diesel that makes 800 ft lbs of torque while getting similar or better MPG as my Tacoma.

Yes diesels cost more to maintain they also have advantages, and then again disadvantages. Each person will have to weigh those for themselves.

Then again what to do I know... I'm a fucking diesel tech student

Yep, they're good trucks. But there's more to it than fuel cost. Purchase cost, fuel, maintenance, insurance, registration, repairs, etc. Then there is resale value. It's about total cost of operation, otherwise we'd all just buy an F350 just for that one time we need to tow 10K pounds.:)

You're right about one thing here Christian, most people here will never need that much torque. Then again, a diesel engine in a tacoma wouldn't have that much torque but it'd still produce better fuel economy and plenty of power.

    Go troll elsewhere.

Really...? Not even worth responding to that.

I tell ya what I'll be buying an ~09 6.7 cummins soon but I'll be keeping the Tacoma as it's a great truck.

Oh and if I'm in the chino hills area, I'll be sure to think of you and blow some black smoke at every stop light. FAPFAPFAPFAPFAP

Probably just delete the EGR and DPF with a tiny tune, that'll help prolong the life of my engine. 350hp and 800ft lbs of torque are plenty for me. It'll stay pretty stock except for some 255/85s and some ranch hand bumpers and maybe sliders.

I think Whipper was molested as a young child by some diesel stacks, hence his great hatred towards them

The us is crazy a strict on diesels. A direct injected turbo gas motor would be a good idea for Toyota to do.

    This.

I would absolutely use the power/tq configuration of a diesel motor.

    Agreed.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_KD_engine#1KD-FTV

The current 3.0 diesel powering the Hilux overseas is a little less powerful than our 4.0, but it has enough (particularly the Torque), and considering the mileage improvement I'd absolutely have gone with that if I was buying right now.

Because manufacturers can't make money on them. The US has huge restrictions on diesel emissions that make them prohibitively expensive. That's why Volkswagen TDI vehicles are more expensive than their gas-powered counterparts. By the time you add all that emissions-scrubbing bullshit, you've added loads of cost.

Then you trot this more-expensive-to-make-and-thus-higher-priced vehicle out there to compete against gas powered vehicles that cost thousands less.

Most people do the math and figure out that diesel fuel costs more and is harder to find. Therefore, even if you use less, the "cost" is a wash. Considering this, customers usually buy the less expensive gas-powered model because diesel savings don't "add up"

Change some regs so diesels can be priced competitively and watch what happens. Almost ALL small passenger/appliance cars in europe are diesel powered. They don't have retarded regs over there.

Maybe. Direct Injection is a new technology with some signs of being less reliable than your standard ICE. I'm sure Toyota will adopt it when it allows for reliability on par with their current offerings.

I had to load my 6.4 PSD work truck onto a car trailer on a dirt street. Put it in L (R L 1 2 3 4 5), and without touching the throttle I let the clutch out a little. Nosed up to the ramp and slowly let the clutch out, got half way up the ramp without throttle or touching the clutch and then the tires just started digging in, I just let it sit there with the clutch out idling and then it finally just crawled its way up onto the trailer, without any throttle. I thought, that's the kind of torque I need wheeling!

Cool story bro, I know. That is what I'd like for wheeling though. 4lo, 1st, you'd just idle through shit.

You carried passengers and related cargo. While that load was pretty much nothing for the full-size Ford, it was significant for the mid-size Tacoma. That, not age or fuel, accounted for the difference. With similar loads (relative to their capacities - say 50% of capacity) on each vehicle, you'll see a much greater difference in fuel economy (the larger diesel will guzzle fuel).

Whut? Diesel powered autos are going the way of the bias-ply tire, into extinction.

It's probably more that Toyota doesn't wanna dump any money into direct injection since they are trying to run with their hybrid crap. Well they finally just got their first direct injected car but had to team up with Subaru to pull it off. I don't see direct injection as being unreliable when it's just adding diesel injectors, high pressure fuel pump that runs off the cams, and a bit more complex tune. A good amount of todays cars are running direct injected. This is going to be the only hope in the US right now to get diesel like power out of small vehicles. This more of my rant for Toyota to get their heads outta their prius loving ass and give us a small truck with good mileage and power so my gutless 4 banger can get an upgrade.
