Let's Play the Price is Right

In negotiations with a dealer via email and he has given me the following out the door prices (from what I can tell both prices include $2,200 in taxes, title, fees etc.)

2012 DC TRD Sport 4x4: $31,600
2012 DC SR5 4x4: $29,361

Note: both include tow package

Should I reasonably expect a lower price? If so how low?

Also, I'm thinking of trading in my 2011 DC SR5 4x4 tow package with 19,000 miles (bought in October 2010). what should I expect for trade in?

the Price is wrong for you anyway you spin it..too much depreciation hit. Keep 2011 5 years 10 years according to Clark Howard

 

Can I ask why you want to trade a 2011 for a 2012?

 

My dealer wanted $33,200 for a 2012 DCLB SR5 with tow package. They don't budge off the prices cause they know people here will buy them at what they tell them it is. My sales man called me back after I got mine and wanted to see if I wanted to come back in to talk. I told him no, that I bought what I wanted 2 days before. He was surprised when I told him that and asked why I didn't call him back. I told him that I told him he had one chance to sell me a truck and he dropped the ball. I told him when someone says you have one chance to sell this to me you had better take them seriously. I bought a 2011 so that helped a little on the price with mine. I got it for $28,400.

 

I'm not afraid to say that when I bought my 2011 I got taken to the cleaners. It was my first big purchase out of college so I definitely overpaid. My goal is to trade in for a new truck with a lower monthly payment. I'm trying to ignore the cash I've already paid into the 2011 as sunk cost. Maybe I can refinance and have the same result?

 

There are a couple of reasons, mostly for a lower monthly payment though. another big factor is potentially making the jump from SR5 to TRD Sport. I see you live in Kill Devil Hills... I envy you.

 

If you feel you must have a 2012, sell your 2011 on AutoTrader. You'll be several thousand ahead over trading it in. Get on kbb.com and research the difference between Trade in price and what you could get as a private seller. Good Luck!

 

2011 4x4 double cabs are going for a pretty penny on autotrader. you could probably sell it for 27-28k on there. dont do a trade in on it unless you want to get hosed twice on the same truck. If you owe more than 25k I would say keep it for a little while longer to get what you owe lower than what you can sell it for.

How does trading in a used truck for a new one lower your payment? Did you get like a 4 yr loan the first time, and now you'll get like a 6 yr? I assume since you were in school or just graduated, you got a decent rate with some sort of college grad discount? I ask b/c I got one when I bought a vehicle the summer I graduated. If you like your current truck, see if you can refi for a longer term.

 

I would consider refinancing through a credit union.
Another new truck when you think you overpaid for the first one last year will not get you a lower payment.
Plus if you want top dollar for your trade they will take top dollar for the new one.
Keep truck, refinance if possible,
If not put as much money you can against the prinicipal then try to refinance.

FWIW end of model year those prices are high

I can get a lower monthly payment on the same term because i got hosed on the first purchase, my bottom line price on the 2011 taco was $35k (wince) I got the extended warranty and some goodies. I did all negotiating in person (with my fiance sitting next to me) so it was like battling two salesmen

this time i'm getting OTD prices online before i even show up, I'm at $29.5K now +/- $250 ... I figure I can get them a little lower when I start playing them off each other.

I agree with some others though... it might be better to refi the remainder... i do LOVE my truck after all.

I'd say if your dead set on a '12, I'd definitely sell outright. Just list it really high and sit on it. If someone bites great, if not refi...

 

Have you talked to any of the dealers about what they'll give you on trade in? If they won't give you payoff then they will roll what's left into the new car loan and you're back in the same boat without the extended warranty and other goodies.
