Besides the obvious fact that one has four-wheel drive and the other is two wheel drive, what's the difference? Can they both go off-roading? Can one outrun the other?

prerunner is faster and has better gas mileage. They can both go off-roading, but different types of offroading. I don't think I will be doing in "mudding" or rock crawling in my prerunner.

the pre runner is couple hundred pounds lighter so will be a little faster but idont think the mileage differs very much. i get the same mileage or better than alot of you prerunner guys in my 4x4

Anything can go offroading.... it's a matter of where you go, how you drive, and how many times you get stuck. :D

I once knew a guy who would go offroading with the rest of the 4x4's (in the group)...and he kept up pretty well. He wasn't afraid to hammer on the gas either. I was surprised he didn't break something for as hard as he was pushing it.

If you live where there's any sort of snow or ice....and you think you'll wanna go offroading.... I would HIGHLY recommend getting the 4x4. You're better off having it than WISHING you had it.

It's not just the weight savings. There also additional friction from the 4x4 system.

As everyone else said the ability of the prerunner is somewhat limited off road, it performs even better with the locker rear end, about the weight and speed and mileage, I would not know.

Prerunner has great capabilities. I was in the snow this weekend and it handled like a champ. Ive been to dunes, mud, mud puddles, and desert. In my opinion people with 4x4's don't like to put in the work and have good times when getting stuck in awkward situations. haha. I did have a 4x4 pull me out a couple of times. I get about 20 mpg in my 3.4 and love it. Just my 2 cents

    I ride the short bus

i would belive that its quicker, but i have to debate the better mileage claim. I get 18 to 21 depending on all the variables (lead foot, winter gas, AC, etc) this seems to be as good if not better than many other people on this site, including other 4x4's and prerunners. My guess is that since no two engines are alike, your mileage outcome is based on how lean or rich your engine comes from the factory, not based on 2wd or 4wd. i get great mileage for a V6 4x4 double cab. i wont debate the prerunner being faster, but i know the mileage is roughly the same

I have seen a lot of 4x4's on here that get better gas milage than I do.
I got 19.2 once. I get as low as 16.x sometimes and probably average at best about 17.

im glad its clear that the prerunners are faster :). but as far as mileage, im not sure it would differ too much, other than the prerunner being lighter and possibly carrying better, i wouldnt say it gets much better gas mileage

I used to have a 96 lifted Tacoma 2wd. It was a very fun truck and effectively very similar to the prerunner. The prerunner is slightly taller and had more clearance but if I would hammer it I could go quite a few places. 2WD can be a lot of fun. You get stuck easier, but it is usually easier to get out too. That little Taco is a truck I wish I still had. I can remember one time where I was wheeling and came across a Polaris 4x4 2 seater little cart thing (sorry I don't know what they are called) he had seized his motor so I towed him out on this terrible road. I had an EZ locker so that helped, but most of the time I had it goosed. Dam little Tacoma pulled this cart over the mountain in small boulders. These weren't bad if you had 4x4 and could crawl it but in 2WD it was different. In my opinion 4x4 is great but a good 2WD is very respectable, plus in most cases you don't risk damaging your truck to seek a challenge.

Well I can say first hand that the 4wd is way better in my opinion. I just went from an 06 Prerunner v6 to an 08 4wd v6 both doublecab longbed and the 4wd is much better in sand. The prerunner would just dig in and bury itself in this Florida sugar sand. I went through the same spots where I got stuck in the prerunner with the 4wd and it was effortless. I also don't notice a difference in the acceleration. They feel exactly the same.

Oh for sure 4X4 is way more capable. I was just rambling on about my old 2WD.
