I am very inexperienced when it comes to buying from a dealer. I bought my 2000 Tacoma new with my then girlfriend and we were young and just paid what they said it cost.

I'm now trying to buy a new Tacoma in S Fla and there doesn't seem to be one in Fla the way I want it. When I said I want to order one, both dealers I have spoken to say "by the time you get it the 2013's will be here". But, umm, I want a 2012.

Then he says there is one in Georgia but "we'll have to see what it will cost me to get it down here".

I'm not going to pay more for the truck because they have to get it am I?

When you order a vehicle vs. buying one off the lot are you normally paying more?

Forgive my noobness, and thanks for any help/advice.

Well, I just went through this same situation. The dealerships can't actually put an order in to get the truck they want. They only get the trucks to replace trucks they sell. so if they sell an access cab, they can get an access cab, etc etc. Southeast Toyota assigns them an allotment (I think that's the term my dealer was using). They can trade allotments, and trade for your car, but to my understanding, they can't actually pick a car you want, and have that one shipped from factory (southeast toyota) to you. Basically, they can't just pick the truck they/you want. What they can do, is just try to trade for the truck.

In my case specifically, I wanted a MGM 4x2 V6 TRD Sport Access Cab with ONLY daytime running lights and tow package. All that other stuff is just profit maker that they add on. Well, I found my exact truck using southeast.buyatoyota.com and can even see when it's shipping, although it doesn't tell you where exactly it's shipping to. I told my dealership, this is the truck I want, this is when it ships, and they tried to get it for me. Unfortunately, Tacoma's are selling extremely well right now. And most people are very specific about the truck they want. The dealership that was getting my truck, (Melbourne) did not want to let go of the truck. Turns out, they already had a deposit on it. So there were a few other trucks that were close to what I wanted, just had extra stuff on them like toyoguard etc, coming out of Southeast Toyota. None were coming to FL so it'd be a while, and a risk, to find the exact one. Dealership told me they could try and "order" one, but with a little pushing and questioning (they already bullshitted me once on the first gray truck) i found out it's still just trading with another dealership and it could take up to two months and still not guranteed. I decided to let them find me a white or black one.

They found me a black one, that even had a few extras on it, but since they had already agreed on a price for the MGM truck they couldn't trade for (after telling me they could) they gave me the black one for exactly the same. It's coming all the way from Alabama, so it's being backhauled, and will go back through the port in Jacksonville. They claimed it cost them $350 to get it here, but didn't charge me that.

As you can see, it's a pain in the ass to get EXACTLY what you want. My best advice is to go on www.southeast.buyatoyota.com and build your exact truck. Notice the available date and a few days before the available date just google the VIN. Should be pretty easy to find where your truck is. See if your dealer can trade for it or go to the dealership that has it.

Again, this is all what i've learned or been told by my dealership (David Maus in Sanford, FL) so take it with a grain of salt.

It's called "allocation"...and it is based on units sold in previous years. The bigger volume dealerships sell more, so they are allocated more.

Yep, that's the word! But have no say in what they get allocated, correct?

Sorry - but the invoices are real (there are items they get back however - items you mentioned which I've specifically laid out from an actual invoice already). That much I know for a fact. They would get in a boatload of trouble otherwise.

It's based on units sold. If a dealer sell the crap out of Tacoma's...he will have a larger Tacoma allocation. If he sells the crap out of Camry's...same thing.

When one orders a vehicle...he is using one of the dealers allocations for that partticular model.

Late in the model year (like now), many dealers are out of allocation and are buying from other dealers just to keep their lot full. Especially on popular selling models like Tacoma.

Dealers also sell/trade allocations with each other at times. A dealer wants to use up all of his allocations or he will not have as many the next year.

Also, this late in the model year...the factory will probably quit taking orders for 2012's because they are tooling up for the 2013's.

DAMN! Just paid about 1,500 and n taxes in FL on my access cab at 26,000. I guess we don't have state income tax though, so it's a tradeoff.

btw, what is the sales tax rate in the county you purchesed in?

$880.00 seems thin for tax-tag-title on a 29-thousand dollar truck.

I work @ Toyota plant in Georgetown, KY. We don't get that great of a break... dealers actual cost plus $2250 extra on 1 vehicle once every 3 years. I guess that pays for the tx & title. Love my '12...been here for 20 yrs & bought my 1st Taco truck. The dealer sometimes has 2 "Dealer Invoices" The 1 he gets, & the 1 you see. Some sites will give you true cost. Good luck!

Larry, your right. I saw the $880 but not the two numbers above. Final number for TTT was $1244. If I had been a SC resident it would have been much less. Won't complain with what I got.
