4x4 light blinking.

Been reading about other peoples 4x4 light blinking problems. Well i have c/o the transfer case oil, unplugged three wires on the actuater so if there was any moisture it could dry out,plugged wires back up, i unplugged the battery so everything could reset and my truck will go in 4x4 but after a little while it quits working again. I can unplug battery and plug it back up and actuater will work for a while so i am not sure about the actuater being bad like the dealership said it was, anybody have any ideas i can try i really hate to drop 1400.00 for an actuater when i can still get in 4x4 sometimes.

 

Have you pulled your actuator and tried cleaning it?

 

I havent because i am unsure of the amount of trouble i may or may not get in taking it out and putting it back in.

 

When the 4x4 light was blinking on my second gen, it would sometimes engage 4wd and sometimes it wouldn't. It ended up being the actuator on the front diff that was the problem. The stealership wanted 1300$ to fix it. I bought the actuator for $350 and some gear oil and replaced it myself. It was a pretty quick and easy job.

 

Hey man that sounds more like what i wanna hear, could you please help me out like where did you find the actuater and could you give me any tips on changing it? Any input would be appreciated i would rather trade it in than pay the 1400.00 they quoted me!

 

I bought the actuator from the Toyota dealership. To change it, I drained the fluid. Unbolted the actuator, put a bead of rtv silicone around the new actuator and bolted it back on. I had to toggle the 4wd switch in order for the new actuator to seat back on the diff. Then I filled it back up. I think that was it-- although I did it about two years ago. The Chilton manual gave a decent walk through, but they forgot to mention draining the fluid. I think there are some decent write ups somewhere around here. Also make sure you have all the supplies and tools you will need first. Perhaps someone else will chime in, in case I'm forgetting something.
