on my 09 DBL cab LB I have noticed when I stop there is a noise and feeling in the rear end like the rear end is catching up and stopping kinda like when your hauling a trailer when you stop, it sounds more like a thump. I dont have anything done to my suspension yet. and was just wonder if any of you guys have heard of this or seen it for yourselves, maybe a rear brake thing????? just a wild guess though. Sorry if it doesnt make sense its really hard to explain.

Take a look at post #9 here. I have experienced the same bump. I noticed that when my truck has weight in the back, it doesn't happen. Possibly something to do with less up/down movement and less movement in the driveshaft when the truck comes to a stop. Mine's an '09 access cab 4x4. That post may or may not help, but it is worth a look.

Its axel wrap. Pretty common on our trucks with automatics.

I am not mechanically inclined, but am trying to learn. What is "axel wrap?"

Axel wrap is the springs remaining "preloaded" after comming to a stop, due to the auto tranny sending power to the axel. Once at a stop, being as the brakes are applied, the rear axel is "stuck" in an pinion up position due to the torque. The springs twist a little bit under this torque. When the brakes are released, the axel returns to its normal position, resulting in a "Thump" sound. Many times it can be felt. This is amplified by the length and soft spring rate of the Tacoma rear springs. Some people have fixed this with liberal amounts of grease applied in the slip yolk of the drive shaft (I have not tried this myself, and Im not sure its a good idea), or the use of an AAL.

you might want to check and see if your getting a leak at where the driveshaft enters the transmission.. i have the same "bump or clunk" and i have had a leak at my transmission i feel is caused be that noise...IMHO

Toyota all weather floor mats. Mag light that clunks around in the jack compartment. Dog hair. Dog drool on the windows.
I started hearing that noise after I had the Spring TSB done. I have a manual transmission.

My Cherokee did this so I pulled the rear drive shaft and packed the yoke with anti seize . Solved the problem. I'm new to the Tacoma so I'm not sure of the drive shaft setup. If it does have a yoke I would try that.

I'm having the same problem......I drive an '07 Prerunner Double Cab..... when I stop and release the brake it seems as though the transmission or rear brakes thump. Maybe the rear calipers? Any ideas?

same issue, im glad im not the only one. i have a single rear drive shaft that was put on when the lift was put on. I bought the truck lifted with only 800 miles on it, and im just rolling over 11k. and this thump hasnt always been there and started about a month ago and is getting worse...
