How many watts does a base model taco HU have?

Looking to get a converter and run an amp, and would like a good idea of how many watts I will actually be amplifying. I considereed switching out the HU completly for just an overall aftermarket setup, but I Just bought the truck (2012) and don't really want to hack into the dash.

So does anyone know? Base model HU for a 2012? Wattage? I can't find it anywhere. Help! Thanks in advance guys.

 

Just swap it out.

There are conversion kits for the 2012 dash... no hacking required, it's plug and play and you'll be done and listening in 20 minutes or less.

Base model HU's problem is not wattage... well... yes, that's part of it... but the bigger problem is the EQ is set to avoid blowing up the shit speakers that Toyota graced us with.

I'm attaching a photo of the stock speaker... but remember that the problem with the sound is the HU. An aftermarket HU will make these speakers sound pretty damned good, right up to the point that they toast.
Alternatively, I installed a set of Polks in my RC base and they sounded no better than stock until I went aftermarket.

The tweeter can lift the main speaker.
The main speaker can not lift the tweeter.

You're not hacking into the dash.
You simply remove the stock HU and replace it with an adapter kit that looks like it came from the factory, and it contains an aftermarket HU.
Wiring is plug and play with the proper adapters.

It's literally a half hour job.

You're doing FAR more hacking by attempting to install an amplifier between the pathetic stock HU and the speakers.... which will not survive on the amp.

 

I know this is a bit off topic but anyone heard of blowing a speaker by not putting enough power to it? I put two alpine type r 6x9's in the front and now one is all distorted. There is no way the stock blew it up so I'm thinking it was from lack of power.

 

Yes you can blow speakers from under powering them.

Alpine Type R's require a hell of a lot more power than what the stock head unit dishes out. I push a clean 80watts to my Type-R's, I think the stock deck does about 10watts.

What happens is you get a high-powered speaker, but it is not as efficient as the lower powered speaker. On a weaker amp, you end up having to turn the volume up to drive the speaker.

If you push the amp into clipping, it is generating heat in the voice coil, same as if you overdrive a low-wattage speaker. During the "flat" or "slipped" part of the audio wave, the speaker is seeing straight DC and generating a lot of heat.

I've watched bass players blow the speakers in a bass amp in 30 seconds by running a "fuzz box"

Alpine amps are good for the money. Rockford T line is really nice, not so much for their other stuff.

 

Well I've been looking at the JL audio jx360/4 amp with JL's 6x9 speakers for the front. Anyone heard anything about them?

are there any head units that can utilize the factory ipod jack? I dont want to have to run a separate included cord to like the glove box or anything, and then just have the factory jack just there and be wasted.

 

JL's are great, but over priced. tons of other brands out there that do just is good, if not better for cheaper.
