33" tires on my 2.7l ???

Anyone done this?
I have an 09 2.7l MANUAL access cab .. can she handle 33" tires on 16" wheels?
(with a lift of course)

 

I have been researching the same thing. It appears that with a 2.5" lift I will get minimal rubbing at full turn occasionally. I'm not worried about it. On the other hand, you should determine what your diff gears are before you decide on 33s. That's a lot of tire to turn on a 2.7L if you have tall gears in the diff. Use your VIN and call a dealer, or there are some guys on this forum who can tell you from your VIN. Then check out the TIRE SIZE CALCULATOR under the "Mods and Tutorials" button at the top of this page.

By the way, I have found that many tire dealers will not install anything greater than a 31X10.50 on a Tacoma. Something about liabilty.

 

Hell yes! I ran 33x12.50 baja claws on a 98 reg cab 2.7 with 2.5 spacers and 3 inch body a little slow on take off but bad ass offroad.

 

Real good info, I did not know you can get the gear ratios from the VIN, will have to check into this for sure.
Minimal rub is no concern for me either, mega rub is my only worry....

Also concerned about losing 5th gear on the Highway??

Country Hills Toyota, the dealership close to my house is actually putting
6inch lifts and Super Swampers 33X13.50 on some of their show room vehicles, in some cases 35X13.50... Yes the dealership is moding brand new vehicles ... a first for Toyota dealers in Canada.

I recall in the mid 90`s everyone had 33`s on there 4 bangers around here.... just wonder if they could climb a hill!

I think you could do some 33's without a gear change though it'll slow down your truck and kill a fair bit of gas mileage probably. If you end up doing them and they're too much, just downsize to 32's and I think you'd be fine then. Either that or fork out the cash for the gears

 

can the dealer regear? How hard is it?

 

I just put 275/70/18's (33's) on my 06 4cyl and its not much weaker than stock. Go for it

is that with a 2.5" lift? is that a manual tranee?

the reason i ask is that canada has not sold i4 auto tranees in maybe 10 years and canada has not sold the i4 manual in at least 6 years ... my 09 i4 manual 4x4 is brand new for canadians in at least 6 years maybe more.
to top that off, canada does not even sell i4 TRD!

i do believe the dealer will regear. but i would imagine the dealer doing gears will be super expensive .... although they will do exhaust and intake for reasonable ...

 

I dont know how much you want to put into it but you can go the route of Long travel. Total Chaos makes excellent suspension systems for 2.7 Taco's. I have the 3" lift with 31's, But they also sell a long travel system which you can definitely put some 33's on after the mod.

Are we talking a 4x4 prerunner or the small 2wd reg cab with the 5lug wheels. Well in my pics here i have 285/70/17 (33") on bone stock height on a 4cyl 4x4. The only way that worked is because I'm running FJ Cruiser wheels wich are positive offset (though i still had to do some inner fender trimming - about 15 min. worth of it). I've been running this set up for about 5k miles now (off road too) and had no problem at all other then mpg. Now 3-4 days ago i jacked up the front 2" because friday i'm set to swap the FJ wheels for a set of moto metals that have a -12 offset (and those would rub slightly without the lift. Hope this helps.

Why is having 33's so important vs a 32' tire? Is it just for looks? Is the 1/2" extra axle clearance going to make the differance between getting stuck and not getting stuck?

I have heard that a wider tire on a light 4 banger in mud is not really a good thing especially if it's a AT tire VS MT tire because you will kind of float on the top of the mud and you will struggle to get traction to the firmer dirt below the surface mud. And too wide of a tire on a light truck is more likely to hydroplane in the rain on the freeway. Even with my 32" MT tires, I can feel it hydroplane on standing water. I thought with the aggressive lugs, that it wouldn't hydroplane as much as it does but it does.

I've been thinking about the same thing as you but I'm going to stick with my stock gears and my 32's and try to keep the factory warranty. Even if you are able to use 5th on the freeway without regearing, what are you going to do about all the extra wear and tear on the brakes? The 33's though only 1" bigger dia, do weigh quite a bit more than 32's. 5-8 pounds more on each wheel will rob HP a lot, plus there is the extra dia. as well.

If I'm going 55MPH on a flat freeway and floor it, the truck will pick up speed but very slowly, unless I downshift to 4th or even 3rd if I'm in a big hurry.

I think 32" tires on a 3" lift fills out the wheel wells just perfect. Not quite as wide as 33's but if you get an aggressive 32" MT tire, they actually look like any 33" AT tire or better IMO. Mine actually measure just a hair under 11" wide at the sidewall on 8" wheels

If you want wide tires and like the Swampers, They make a 31"x12.5x16" Bogger that would give you traction galore in mud and weighs within a pound or two of my 32's.

I actually thought about getting a cheap set of wheels in 16x9 or 16x10 and those boggers and using them for all day mud fun but doubt I will. I'm afraid they would blowout on the hour and a half freeway drive to get there.

Don't worry bud, you are not missing out on much. An I4 TRD is not offered anywhere. Only the V6 is offered for the TRD packages.


As for your original question, the 4 banger should be able to move some 33s without much of a problem. Granted you will loose some mileage, and a little power to the ground, I don't think it would be anything to worry about.

If you have an '09, the rear end in your 4x4 I4 is a 4.10.

 

Hey, thanks for the info and detailed info... I really like the look of your Tacoma with the 32" tires, it looks like it is a going anywhere doing anything macine!! ... you may have convinced me to go with 32`s... Also, I was not aware of "31X12.5X16" swamper... going to look into the weight of these... that maybe the way to go...
In Canada the swampers are fabulous in deep snow in the winter.

Hey, I almost bought a 2007 Tacoma Regular Cab 4X4 I4 Manual in Vancouver for $19,000 cdn with only 14,000miles.... so they do exist, but they are quite rare.
I think Texas has the biggest market for these...

That is news to me. I searched high and low to find a TRD I4 and was told by the dealer it did not exist. According to the Toyota website a TRD package is not available for any of the 09' I4 cab styles.

Texas might be the larges market because Sockmonkey puts out some awesome TRD bedside decals. You would never be able to tell the difference between them and the real deal unless you looked for all of the minute differences between an actual TRD equipped trucks and the look-a-likes. Just a thought.

 

Your truck looks good man. Though 32s vs 33s is just because you can. Mud floating issues don't have as much to do with the overall diameter as it does with sidewall height (65,70,75) and that more or less is determined by the size of rims you run (16,17,18,20).
Hydroplaning also has more to do with width, thread and brand of tire as it does overall diameter. Everytime it rains, i powerslide my truck on porpuse (for fun) and i have a much harder time doing it now on my 33" muds as i did on oems. Oems were much lighter (spun faster) but they had much less contact with the ground (245 vs 285) and shitty thread.
I hope you're not saying that you gun it at 55mph in 5th in order to pass....? You'll grind out your 5th gear by the time you hit 70k miles...
At 55mph in a manual, you should be cruising in 4th and passing in 3rd.

 

i got 265/70/16 on 16x8 rims on mine which is equal to 31s...and the speedo is right on...going higher like 32s or 33s the speedo will be off a bit and 31s don't require a lift kit and there is no rubbing at all
