    SO....

The other night my 91 year old grandfather was having chest pains and was rushed to the hospital. Not the 1st time this has happened. While at the hospital, at some point he got up from his bed (which he should NOT, and thats why there was an alarm on the bed, IF he got up from it then it SHOULD go off for the nurses) fell and broke his fucking shoulder. Its the size of a frigging watermelon. OH, and his room was right in front of the nurses station KNOWING that he is a high risk patient.

He has surgery today to fix the broken shoulder. I sure hope he makes it out of it. I mean hes really old and on his last leg! Hes in some serious pain!

My parents are super pissed and have already contacted a lawyer.

    Your thoughts?

My grandmother broke her shoulder when she was sitting up in bed. I think she was 91. She lived another 7 years.

Your grandfather will probably be fine. At the same time, it is hard being that old with a degrading body, no friends, and no spouse. Some times it is best to move on.

I couldn't agree more. At a time like this my thoughts are for your grandfather to recover and have some piecefull time. Prayers out for grandpa, Neon.

as long as he gets better thats all that really matters but that is bullshit they should of been taking care of him especially knowing that he is a fall risk and if they didnt have the alarm set or it was faulty they are totally in the wrong! hey see if its worth a shot and take some guap away from those crooks we call hospitals.

Sorry to hear about your Grandfather :(

Your lucky it didn't happen here at the local hospital, they have cut so many of the staff that to avoid back injuries to the staff when someone falls out of bed they are instructed to call the fire dept, the aid guys come and pick up the patient and put them back in bed!

Tax dollars and patient care at it's finest

Ask visa or my wife. They both constantly remind me how much I've got left to spend.
Sorry about everything but I hope I can help with some info. I am a physical therapist at a nursing home/sub acute care facility and if the nurses had a bed alarm on your grandfather then unless they had a signed consent form to restrain him they can't do anything to keep him in the bed. At our facility we have alzheimers and dementia patients in the long term care part of the facility and it is illegal for us to restrain them in any way. This means we can't even lean them back in their recliners if they can't sit them up or it is considered a restrain because we are restricting their movement against their will. We can only put a wonderguard bracelet on them which locks the doors and keeps them from going outside. However if they heard the alarm and didn't react then that is negligence and you can take them to the cleaners and have the state dept look into that.
