Is it possible that the global economy has produced the need for more direct routes? Or that technology in ship building has made this route more accessible?

When I see a volcano effectively shut down European air traffic (2010) or a tsunami like Japan experienced or even the Katrina devastation, it just makes me think mankind is at the mercy of
    Mother Nature.

The fact is nobody truely knows. The world has cooled and warmed for many years. Before cars or anyother polutants out there. The fact that we continue to make laws and regulations based on guesses just shows our ignorance and stupidity. Does that mean the world is not warming, no. It probably is but there is no evidence we are causing it. Does that mean don't recycle, no we do use a lot of resources. If they were so concerned about the enviroment then cap and trade wouldn't be allowed. Its all about money. I guess if u run out of ideas to make money u just have to create one.

My biggest complaint is loopy ways it's dealt with. For example, California is unilaterally implementing it's own cap-n-trade system this year, thanks to Swartzenegger's "Global Warming Final Solution Act" (an Austrian should never call something the "Final Solution"). It's guaranteed to make it more expensive to do business in California and drive more business out of California.

Even the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which is known for it's heavy handedness, is worried about the effect it will have on business. They're going to give away free pollution credits for the first couple of years of the program so it won't immediately drive more businesses out of the state. After all, why would you set up manufacturing here when you can do it with almost no regulation in Nevada.

Obama's own advisors stated that unless everyone plays (China & India), cap-n-trade puts any country at an economic disadvantage which is why it bi-partisanly rejected.

Now California is the only state in the nation that is going to do cap-n-trade.

Well if you build around a volcano or live in a flood plane and mother nature throws a curve ball what do you think will happen? That's like touch a hot stove and expecting not to be burned . For those kind of things yes, we are at the mercy of mother nature.

As far as the polar ice caps melting? no that is not "natural". The rate they are melting is MUCH faster then the rate it took to build them up, which should be a red flag. Kind of like when an engine starts eating oil at an un-godly rate, you know something is wrong.

There is plenty of evidence that we are influencing climate change. Why do you think theres not?

Yes, we are at her mercy. But humans have entered a period where we are collectively a global force. Look up anthropocene. We've fundamentally altered the chemistry of the atmosphere. We've seriously perturbed the system. Now we will really be at her mercy.

Not true, there is an unbelievable amount of evidence that indicates the climate is changing and the gigatons of greenhouse gases dumped into the atmosphere each year are a primary cause.

I don't love cap and trade, but it is a workable solution. I would love to hear better solutions. Maybe instead oil and coal companies should have to pay for the clean up I the pollution they get to dump into the atmosphere for free. We don't let nuclear power generators dump their waste in the street. Fair is fair, right?

By the way "final" is not in the title of that bill. And CARB should be concerned. It should matter to a regulatory agency that a rule could have negative economic impacts. I appreciate that they are working sensitively to ease the regs into place. And, with the seventh largest economy in the country, we are likely going to be okay. Interestingly, the global warming solutions act has also spawned LOTS of innovation and new jobs and companies. It will at least be a wash, economically, and could be a boon in the long run.

There is no evidence that we directly cause global warming. Just because we can track whats happening to the world a lot better now with tech doesnt mean that we are causing the changes. It just means we are now able to track the changes that happen to earth. How do u know that this doesnt happen every couple hundred years? Heating or cooling. I believe we are using a lot of resources but to say we are causing a significant change to earth....

i have a question for the alarmists... a matter of formality, i'd like to make sure we are "on the same page" in terms of lexicon...

    what do we call this?
    a) global cooling (a.la. the 1970s hysteria)
    b) global warming (a.la the al gore frenzy in the 1990's/2000's)
    c) "climate change" (i.e. what you call it after both (a) and (b) are not only contradictory, but also refuted)...
