Meh. I kinda like the west. Thanks though. :)

Rep to you! Thanks. And have fun out there, but also be careful hiking alone, as mentioned.

It's not the animals or terrain I worry about...it's the crazy man hiding in the woods waiting to attack you!! If you haven't thought about it already - self defense classes are a good way to educate and prepare you to defend yourself and the information they teach you will stay with you forever. :D

    Ok, back to geocaching!!

It's a hobby you can do completely on your own and no schedule to keep.

Depending on your area - there may or may not be 'groups' that you can get involved with. Meeting like minded people is always fun and knowing people and having their phone numbers to call for hints on the harder caches is always fun too.

You can make this hobby whatever you want it to be.... seek out caches along hiking trails....seek out caches on biking trails.... seek out caches in scenic areas. There are caches that require scuba diving to find them, kayaking, rock climbing, and many others....If you like solving puzzles...there are puzzle caches to solve to get the coordinates (I suck at this), there are puzzle caches of challenges to finish.....
Here's an example of a Puzzle challenge:
    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=b763c363-34e1-4eca-b32f-fd95f758629a
Here's an example of a puzzle to solve (this is my cache)
    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=f4426b21-feee-4c76-a632-c23fb83f97b2

You can hide your own caches - and watch people find them. We have about 10 of our own caches. Myself and another cacher setup a Battleship Game in our area (with help of other cachers also). There are 100 Battleship caches hidden. Of those 100, there are HITS (17 caches). You have to find where the HITS are, collect the partial coordinates to find the SHIP caches (puzzles). I have 12 Battleship caches hidden.

Like I said, vigilance of the people is as important as vigilance of other threats :) its been a while since I brushed up on my self-defense training, perhaps you're spot on regarding that!

I am not only new to geocaching but also new to ND so I'm looking forward to exploring! I found the coordinates for one placed in the ND convention and visitors bureau office, specifically to welcome geocachers to Bismarck. And I also found the coordinates for the oldest cache in ND, placed in 2001 and it gets 2-3 logs a month! If yesterday's rain has cleared off I might go find them later today.

And looking around where my parents live... Man I wish I'd known about geocaching when I lived there! There are tons of them. They have a 5-part challenge on these lake park trails, 4 trails that are each 7 miles long, one cache on each and one more to complete the challenge. I walked each of those trails once a week for 8 months straight. Really? LOL I'm so doing that challenge next time I visit my parents. And they have 2 EarthCaches within 5 miles of their house.

I've been missing out for so long! I'm designing signature cards to leave with whatever I bring along for trade items. Yeah. I'm so excited about it.

Noooo, not at all. Just busy.
Found out I have the weekend off, so I'm really excited to get out and cache this weekend! We have only 9 spots left on our Fizzy chart (difficulty/terrain chart) and we wanna knock some out and fill up the chart. My husband has some new hiking boots we need to break in.

I need another small insulated backpack to carry drinks/snacks. The one I have now is all messed up (it didn't handle the outdoors very well) .

What's your plans? Anyone else caching this weekend?

I have finals coming up, so not much play time for this guy. One final tomorrow morning, another on Monday, and the last one on Tuesday.

:woot: first find logged today :D

Also tried to find another one, but the area was flooded not too long ago and it looks like the cache was lost in the flood. But it was a fun 1/4 walk down a muddy, muddy road. Even with my Tacoma I didn't try it, and judging from the vehicles I found down the road, that was a good decision.

Have fun and be safe!! Don't get discouraged if you can't find them..... start out with the easy ones (1/1, 1.5/1.5, etc). The more you get out the more experience you get and the easier they are to find.

It's addicting..... We've been going nuts geocaching on the water with our new kayaks!!

In my experience the smart phone app will get you close but a good hand held GPS will get you closer to the cache. Google earth and a geo cache app is good if you plan on crossing rivers and the like. My first gps was a garmin older than you dads and it worked great, so you are good to go, just go out and find some areas you probably never knew existed right in your own back yard. Good luck. I started caching in May and never used anything but my iPhone. It works pretty well, tends to be a few feet off but it's never been so bad I couldn't find a cache (I've had a few did not finds but I don't think this was from the GPS accuracy).

I had problems today though in eastern Montana/western North Dakota, still found the cache but only because I'd put the coordinates in my GPS navigation in my truck before I got out of cell signal range. In my experience no 3G means no GPS either (not sure how this actually works, whether the GPS works via the cell tower or what).

I've been thinking about getting an actual handheld GPS unit, but never had problems. As I get farther and farther out with my caching that is getting more serious consideration.

Anyway, good luck caching! It's lots of fun.

Thanks we had a blast and are heading out again today.

We just hit some spots close to the house last night and found four of them. 3 were the micros with just a log and one was a box hidden at the base of a tree. It had some fishing gear. I loved it and the kids were hooked after the first find. The kayaking sounds pretty awesome. I've actually just started research on kayaks.

I'm just using my iphone too. Haven't ventured out far from civilization, but definitely plan on it now that I know the kids are into it. I might spring for a handheld soon. Plus it will give the kids something to use instead of fighting over my iphone. haha

Only one correction. .. The Baja peninsula is not part of California but part of Mexico and the 28° parallel is the border between the two states of Baja California and Baja California Sur.
