One thing that two different family friends mentioned to me was that they each had lost their glasses during their escapes from 2 World Trade and were quite nearly blind with all of the smoke, ash, and debris that was in the air. Both have since invested into laser eye surgery so that they could remove that liability from their lives. Both have since commented since their surgeries that they wish they had mustered up the courage sooner as they really appreciate their freedom from corrective glasses.

I'm grateful to hear that you and your neighbors are okay but if you qualify for corrective surgery I'd strongly suggest that you consider it.

You guys are in the stone age. For the kind of money you have tied up in your rigs you could have a nice 2 meter radio with tenfold the capability. Plus you can communicate directly with fire/ems/sheriff in a pinch.

Yes, please provide some good options for a good setup. Have always wanted to put a high quality radio(cb) in my truck but just haven't had the time to do the research.

SOLD the Tacoma. Landcruiser life now.
    +1

He is referring to Amateur radio (Ham radio) not CB (Citizens Band). CB is pretty worthless in my opinion and is really only used for small/close meet ups and truckers. Being how this is a survivalism thread, there should be a good intro to ham radio... how to get licensed, good mobile and HT rigs... etc.

I have one similar to this- http://www.pciraceradios.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=4184933584391276545
Mine is 75W and if you buy from PCI it gets tweaked and tuned before shipping, and you can have them program it too if you're a technophobe. For my Icom, I removed one resistor on the circuit board to be able to transmit, as well as receive on the emergency bands. In and of itself this is not illegal, but transmitting in anything other than a life threatening situation is strictly verboten. That said, there is lots and lots of bandwidth available in the "land mobile" frequency range that doesn't require a HAM license. Construction companies, cops, fire, ems, ups, etc use these freqs to handle their daily business. The 2M band extends from 144 MHz to 148 MHz, and is reserved for HAM nerds. The offroad desert raciing guys usually use the 150 MHz + - 5 range for their race needs, as well as NASCAR, etc. The range available with 2M is astonishing, and 40+ miles LOS are not uncommon. The cool thing is, the wavelength also has enough poop to bounce off the ionosphere and achieve ridiculous range. It is not uncommon for me to scan in Oregon and hear Russian voices. There is also a worldwide network of privately funded repeaters that connect the world. This network was used heavily during 9/11 and Katrina when the cell phones stopped working. I hate plugging myself, but I'm a radio tech with the National Weather Service and we are part of this whole emergency broadcast BS so if there is an emergency you could find out about it even if the web and landlines are down via your local weather radio channel. Usually in the 160's...enough about that dookey, do your own research! I bet you end up with a 2M radio though...

You have a point, but that staff it's always in my truck. But I do have better gears and B.O.B. that I will load, if I have the chance.

I spend just about every weekend of the spring and fall camping out at music festivals I help with. I also go to Burning Man, love to camp and wheel in general and might head to the snowboard mountains the night of a big dump and sleep in the back so I can get nice fresh in the morning. All this translates into more or less survival prep.

My rear under seat bins are full of recovery gear, a few quarts of oil, ratchet straps, jumper cables, power inverter, tire buddy deflator, leatherman, tp etc.

Sometimes I have amy big tool box and also a Bosch electric cordless impact (LOVE this thing!)

Besides the ARE custom camper shell that's being built to order right now I have one 2 person all season Black Diamond tent and a 6 person Kodiak canvas tent that I pretty much live in all summer. The back usually has two Coleman Extreme coolers, a weeks worth of Reliance water containers, stove and fuel, dry goods, lots of lighting, lots of spare batteries, camo netting for shade, BFH and rebar stakes, zero degree sleeping bags, air mattress and waterproof/breathable shells and boots.

I guess the next steps are CB or HAM and on board air and spare parts and I'd feel pretty well prepared.

Oh yeah I think I need to get a gun and get good with it. That and move out of the city!
