Seems normal. When I start my 'cold' engine, the rpms are high....

This was concerning for me early on when I bought it, but obviously it's not a problem.

Ya, the trans won't be hurt, but I do wait for the engine to idle down a bit before putting it in gear.

The tran won't warm up until you put it in gear. Normal idle ranges will be stated in your owners manual for first gens the jump and idle at 1,500 on a cold start is normal idle on a warm engine is 700 rpm.

Only thing you gotta worry about with start up and goes is the oil pump in your engine priming. Shouldn't take longer that the time it takes you to put your seatbelt on and check your mirrors (30sec) And welcome to the T-Dub from south east PA. Where in PA did ya stop at?

Even after an oil change, my light is out by the time the ignition kicks.
