Agreed with this. Have been wearing a shoe 1.5 sizes too small for running because they are the size shoe I have worn forever. I went to a "running store" and had the gait assessment done. Much better shoe and much more pleasurable running experience.

    congrats :)

my run yesterday didn't go so great, we did a little over half the route and I was totally spent, has me seriously re-thinking this run. it's much more technical than I imagined, lots of basically rock scrambling/crawling many of the "trails" are nothing more than old mountain goat routes and travel straight up in many places- no luxury of switchbacks- literally on your toes for over 1/2 hour in places

you have to constantly watch each foot placement and I was very lucky as I caught myself after slipping on loose rock several times- I don't think a person will always be that lucky; I made all of the cutoff times, but not by a lot

I am very fortunate we didn't decide to do the full route!

on a positive note- it was awfully pretty :D

some decent trail in this section headed for Ross Pass

this was a really tough stretch from Ross Peak towards Bridger- if you look really hard towards the middle of the pic you can see Joe on the ridge

    ^^^^Beautiful county. Consider yourself lucky.^^^^

I've been dealing with some sort of virus over the last few weeks and I've had some tough runs as I try to push through it. I usually average 7:15-30 over this 9.5mi run, but the heat, humidity and my illness had me running 8:45's. Sad and painful (mentally and physically), but its getting better I think. Amazing how a little illness can knock me down so drastically.

    Gotta keep running!!

BTW, what are you training for? Or are you just running those wicked mountains for fun?

That looks awesome and painful at the same time. I can't wait to read your race report when its all done. Have fun and remember that life is just a collection of experiences. This looks like a great one to add to your collection!!

So i figured i might give this a try...I'm participating in the Relay for life this Friday, for those of you who don't know what it is, it is a fundraising event held by the American Cancer Society where walkers/runners raise money to help cancer research. My whole family is doing it, cause unfortunately we've lost 5 family members to cancer. So we support this cause to the full extent.
Now i come to you TW, for support and maybe even if you are generous, a donation. It would be greatly appreciated and i would forever be thankful. Every dollar counts, everyone in this country has experienced the awful effects of cancer, stand with me and help FIGHT BACK!

Please help out, follow this link and donate!

had a great run in the mountains a couple of days ago :) ran into Torrey Lake which is situated between Tweedy and Torrey mountains, both over 11,000'- the lake sits at 9200'

18 mile run, the first 5 or 6 miles is pretty gentle and you can make good time, the last 3-4 miles the elevation starts to really climb

Jacobson Meadow- gorgeous mountain meadow that is over 2 miles long

well I'm happy to report I survived the Bridger Ridge Run :) it was definitely the most grueling run I've ever done

the weather did cooperate, race started in the mid 50's and ended in the low 80's

the race started at Fairy Lake, elevation 7500' and then quickly climbed to the top Sacagawea Peak at 9600' in 2.2 miles, this was basically a power walk as it's too steep to run (even if you could you'd be wasting precious energy)- there was a small aid station here where they had cups of water only

the course continued around the west side of Sacagawea and then precariously drops quickly ~ 2000'- this is a rather dangerous section and you have to really be on your toes; you then hit probably the best trail section of the race as it skirts below Ross Peak, the trail then climbs (not overly steeply) to Ross Pass- there was a good aid station there w/ lots of food/water/beverages- you're now 7 miles into the run

the next section was absolutely brutal, climbing out of Ross Pass- it quickly climbs 1000' in less than a mile, when you get to the top you're welcomed to some very technical rock work- this is definitely not a place you want to fall. You have ~ 3 miles of this jagged rock to traverse before hitting Bridger Peak, this is the 2nd full aid station and about 11 miles into the course; shortly after leaving the aid station I followed three guys and eventually found out we took the wrong trail. I could hear voices well above me and picked my way up to the correct trail. Got back up on top of the ridge w/ more technical rock stuff and Saddle Peak looming ahead- you could see the trail and there wasn't a single switchback in it- straight up. A lady gave me good advice and said don't look up, just grind it out- good advice. After climbing Saddle Peak you could see Mount Baldy- seemed like a long ways off.

When I finally hit Baldy (~ 15 miles in) the fatigue started really setting in and the full sun was getting hot. After Baldy you really start to drop, you'd think this would be welcomed relief after all the brutal climbing, but it's too steep and quickly your quads get zapped and your feet get scorched from all the sliding. I fell once pretty bad going down and when I lifted my leg it instantly cramped- no more falling! :D After what seemed like an eternity, I finally made it to the finish line (20.5 miles)- 7 1/2 hours later. I was hot, sore and exhausted, but I made it!

I don't know if I'll do this run again, I love running in the mountains, but this was more than just a little on the sadistic side :)

Read through, there is a LOT of good advice in here!

Howdy folks, I'm back! I have been averaging between 22-30 miles a week. I went running even on 110+ weather. My homemade electrolyte was KING during that time and of course the low OK humidity (30% or less, though if you asked the locals the humdity was "high")

Another detriment was crossfit, it is HARD to stay up in the miles and do Crossfit three times a week, but it has been worth it. I lost almost 20 lbs of body fat and gained 7 of muscle. Went from a 36 waist to 33 and can do 25 "military" pull ups like it's no one business. My speed has increase, even during the heat wave we had and can now do 6 miles in less than 55 mins!

My 10K record is 51:08, but that was in 50 degree weather, I can now do 6 miles in 55 in 100+ weather!

Any way, I wanted to experiment how the thread would survive w/o me and it looks pretty good so far! :yay:

^^^ i hear ya man. it's extremely difficult to keep up on the miles when adding crossfit and oly lifting to the equation. i do the same thing

i have a half marathon coming up in 2.5 weeks so i've been up-ing the running a bit more and cutting back on the heavy weights.

Honestly, nowadays the only lifting I do is Cross Fit related, as I want to become leaner, for the rock climbing. Big muscles do not help when climbing, strong lean muscles do! ;)

an open invitation - a group of us (same group that ran the Grand Canyon in April) is going to try a trans-Zion traverse on October 27th we'll start on the west of the park at Lee's Pass and finish on the extreme east end of the park at the East Rim trailhead, total miles is 48, there is roughly 10,000' of elevation gain (and loss)

    zion-elevation-profile_cc16ad85000c3dd2ecd0e923d13bc0a6dd275457.jpg

should be an epic run :D

    if anyone is interested lmk
