    Well, I've been searching and reading and can't find what I'm looking for:

    I have a 2012 V6 5 spd auto 4x4 access cab, TRD off-road. It's runnig 3100 rpm at 75 mph, is that normal??? It seems like it never shifts into 5th...

    thanks,
    LB

    No. At 75 I usually sit around 2300 or so RPM

    x2. Sounds like you're either not shifting into 5th or your torque convertor isn't locking up. If you take your foot out of it, or on a flat run will the RPMs drop and hold your speed or do the RPM's stay up?

    Auto = no clutch

    Have any chipmunks near you? One of those little bastards chewed through the harness on top of the tranny in my truck and the tranny wouldn't go into overdrive but mine did have a CEL and throw a code.

    *disclaimer this thread is pointless because you didn't say what size tires you are running.

    This. If you calculate the speed mathematically based on gear ratios and tire diameter, 75 mph would be at about 2280 rpm in 5th gear and 3170 rpm in 4th.

    If this is happening at steady cruise, there's problem with either the transmission or the linkage.

    You are driving with the shifter in "D" and not "4", right? :)

    Assuming it's the stock tire size, that's what we have to go on.

    Thanks for all the input!

    It's official, I'm a dumbass. I didn't realize the shifter also goes left and right. I've been driving in 4 not D.

    Glad it worked out! I did the same thing when i first drove one of those fancy autos and it falls into the manual slot real easily.

    I did the same thing with my 2011 4 speed automatic. I kept looking for a switch or button to engage overdrive. The owners manual is a little deficient about the "slap to the right for overdrive".

    haha! this happened to me also. I went and picked up an 08 auto about 200 miles from home. figured out about 50 miles in back home what was going on. i was woundering why in the hell my new truck was running at such high rpms on interstate 75. For the next two weeks I was sometimes shift into 4! (but again that was my first auto trans though!)

    I had been so used to every automatic I'd ever driving being a 4-speed, that when I first got my 2005, I assumed that "D4" was standard driving gear...and drove it home from the dealership that way. Now, I'll be honest and admit that mistake, however it also only took my reading of the owners manual the first night I owned to the truck (and remembering that it was indeed a 5-speed trans) to figure it out and correct the problem. Very easy to see how that happens though...

    Now...I'd ask the a similar question regarding the high RPMs on my current 6 speed manual Tacoma, but apparently that's normal. Really wish 6th gear would run at lower RPM and help me get more MPGs on the highway!
