Colorado Springs police say an outdated “cheat sheet” for police officers on city laws may have led to the mistaken arrest of a 24-year-old man for openly carrying a 40-caliber gun at Pride Fest on July 21.

According to city and state law for almost a decade, people are allowed to openly carry guns in city parks.

“He was right and we were in the wrong, definitely,” said Barbara Miller, police spokeswoman.

    Just getting started.
When I carry it is always concealed, I know its your legal right to open carry but it attracts to much unwanted attention for me.

An example of officers assuming they are the law instead of following it...

I never understood the appeal of open carry. Too much "hey look at me" for my personal liking. I feel like in a bad situation involving a gunman, by showing you have a weapon, you'd be the first one shot. Anything I'm missing? Or is it just an expression of freedom?

if its your time its your time... intimidation can settle alot of incidents before a gun is even pulled...if the guy is set on shooting a bunch of people your fucked regardless.

Whipping your gun out at a pride fest, to me, is always a recipe for disaster! Keep it in your pants! :p

If someone is going to go to the trouble of pulling a robbery or the like they probably will take that into account. If people are willing to rob a GUN STORE I don't think open carry is that big of an intimidation factor.

i dont feel like the point here should be why or why not openly carry. my 2 cents on that though, is look at texas, nobody tries anything stupid cuz everyone is carrying.

THE POINT THAT SHOULD BE TAKEN from this video. if you are going to openly carry, KNOW the law, the wording, and the penal code. insted of saying "your violating my second ammendment rights". also, he should have asked the cops, "what am i being arrested for/detained for" not why cant i leave. Ask for the LAW that is being broken in which they are areesting for. and after and hour, i would have said, if i am not arrested right now, im leaving.

also, it goes to show cops dont know all the laws, nor do they tend to care. Itr seems these officers were not educated enough to even call a superior and ask to look up the law forbidding carrying openly in a city park. obviously, they would have found he was in teh right.

conclusion. KNOW THE GODDAMN laws if you want to aviod this. Educate yourself, cuz youll end up having to educate the officers. doint rely on them to know everything.

they ran like pussies. it definitely flipped the incident. but robbing an unmanned gunstore vs trying to rob a man who has a gun at ready are 2 different things...

I like all the info and agree with most of what everyone has said. I own a couple handguns, but don't carry, so it's nice to see other peoples' opinions.

Open carry is the right enumerated in the constitution of the us and of the several states...concealed carry is something that can be banned at will by state legislatures

it's tough to enforce laws when you're not sure of what those laws are.
these types of situations should result in the officers being re-educated and tested on their states gun laws.
