I was told that the 2 main keys turn on the engine and cost $180 to replace if lost. The third is called a valet key, yet it starts the truck too , what is the difference? Thanks ...Rich [IMG]

The third key is the valet key you would give the dealer when you get your Taco serviced. That key will not open the glove box in case you have something of value you want to keep:D

My glove box has no lock? I have no 3rd key? Unless you count that credit card key thingy, which I have not tried to use.

That's it. I'm gonna go to the dealer and demand a TSB for the locking glove box.

I want one. Hell my old 91 f-150 had both a locking glove box and a locking center console (which you could fit a small child in BTW)

So the word is that I don't know what the hell the third key is for either:) Sorry for that missinformation! !

Not much. Toyota bed mat, Toyota step bars, tinted windows, Toyota seat covers, Toyota all-weather mats, quart of Wild Turkey in the glove box, KelTec PT3AT in the center console, backseat full of old speeding tickets
Most of the new models have a transponder located in the key. I had to replace the key in my wifes Chrysler Pacifica and paid $150 for the key and $50 to have it reprogramed. I assume the Tacoma key is the same. There is a permenant battery in there too.

I have heard that the valet key cannot have a copy made and that the other keys can have copies made at the dealer.

Well, I can debunk that one. I use my valet key on a regular basis (I keep it in that screwy 3rd pocket in my jeans), and I definitely go over 3,000 RPM all the time.

In on eof the manuals i read the two black keys are the regular keys. The grey one does everything the black ones do except you cannot get a copy of the grey one and expect it to start the truck, it will only open the door.

If you are able to use that key as you said, whats the point in a transponder?

That's correct, the black keys (master keys) can be copied electronically at the dealer or some very rare specialized locksmiths if you need a replacement, the grey key (valet key) can't be copied electronically.

If you loose both of your master keys, you need to have the number in the metal tag that came with the keys when you got them from the dealer to reproduce the same code on the new keys.

If no tag or master keys are available, then the whole system will have to be reprogramed at a very expensive cost.
