First off I'd get the amp mounted solid.

When mounting you need to look for a spot with adequate air flow. Most amp instructions will give the requirements of how much space you need from the amp so that it has the ability to dissipate heat correctly. I'd take a look at what your amp requires and verify you can mount it in the spot you want.

While I was working on everything I'd also check your wiring to ensure that it is good, safe and that you are not wiring the amp for a load it is not designed to run.

In instances where I know everything is correct and have mounted the amps in an enclosed display rack, I have employed fans to move the air through the amp rack as well. Just depends on how you end up needing to mount the amp on the fan part. I'd do my best to verify everything and mount it within the manufacturer requirements before popping fans on it etc.

I know this won't be the answer you want to hear, but get a better amp.

Boss amps are not very well built and have over heating issues.

If you want to keep the amp, then what Hillingdoner said was right. Mount it correctly, look at the manual and see how much air space is needed to keep it running without over heating.

I run a Rockford 400watt 4 channel and an Alpine PDX 600watt mono block, they sit right next to each other behind the rear seats, no over heating issues at all and it is 117 outside today in Az.

Understand tight budget totally. Just buy the best you can afford if you decide to replace. I freely admit I have never used a Boss amp and as such can't comment on reliabilty. Right or wrong though, my perception of them is not that good. That is not to say that they won't power your sub. Perhaps more an issue of you may not be getting the clean power that you believe you are out of it.

Regardless of amp used you need to mount it securely/safely, have adequate wiring to support it that is safely run and is fully fused. You also need to pay attention to the air flow needed as outlined in the amps instructions. Would not hurt to do the big three also. Loads of how-to articles on this online. Be sure to also set your gains correctly.

Alpine is a good name brand. Ratings are true and everything I've ever seen is that they are reliable and solid overall. Then again there may be some that will bash them as they have their own particular brand they like. Do your research, maybe check out a few quality local audio stores, look at RMS numbers, check out efficiency and electrical requirements and pay close attention to size if that is an issue. Online, crutchfield is a wealth of info when it comes to getting specs, testing, reviews etc. Take the customer reviews with a grain of salt as there will be varying degrees of experience out there.

On your existing install, get the amp mounted right and in a spot that meets vent requirements first before you look into putting fans around. Just mounting it correctly could cure your issue for you.

    Cheers
