Im in the air right now between a Tacoma TRD Sport or Off-road and an F-150 with Eco-boost.

I like the Taco alot but I can get so much more truck for less and similar gas milage with the F-150. For instance there is a dealership selling an XLT Quad cab ecoboost 4x4 for 30k sticker so prob take 4k or more off that given its a 2012.

Im really just curious if I could expect around 18-19 mpg combined highway and city?

I was also wondering, if you drive your truck to empty how many gallons does it take to fillup? I know the tank is said to hold 21.1 gallons but my tahoe held 26 and the most I could ever get in it was 23-24.

Also, how many total miles will a full tank travel?

    Thanks for your help

well u are on the Tacoma web site you are going to get "buy the toyota" advice from me, but it depends how long you plan to keep it main use and what you like the looks of. Toyotas hold resale value no question there, on the other hand parts are expensive, but i think in the end the tacoma is worth it I have an 006 and it still books for over 23,000 and find an f-150 that will do that after 6 years.. thats what matters to me.

gas mileage all depends on your driving, so i wouldn't base your decision on that alone. i went from an f150 to a 2nd gen tacoma and im so glad i did. honestly the f150 is a good truck for towing and may have more bed space, but its just a waste of space and heavy. the tacoma has more versatility. its honestly up to you. what do you do? if you are into construction or towing heavier things, get a full size pickup. if you are into off roading and zipping around anywhere, get a taco. sure they are both 4x4, but maneuverability is also a big aspect. have you ever driven a full size truck? parking can sometimes be a pain in cramped parking lots. just make a pro and con list. only you can decide on what you want and what you need.

F150 is a great truck, but it's too much truck for me personally...I wouldn't have any reason to own anything that big. You may.

I rarely let my gas get below 1/4 tank before filling (just a habbit of mine), but I'm now on my 2nd Tacoma, and I'm pretty sure the most gas I've ever put in was just under 19 gallons, and that was with the gas light on for several miles.

I assume that is 2WD, but still that doesnt seem right. These trucks have an msrp of of close to $40,000 for a four door ecoboost. i know there is some strong rebates and a 2wd would be cheaper, but $10k is hard to believe. oh yea, dont every believe the ads in the newspaper.

I too was deciding between ecoboost and taco....after talking to 2 fellow workers with the new ecoboost...they said fuel economy was not what they expected it to be....they previously owned ford pickups...I ended up going with a used tacoma 4x4, I am happy so far! Nimble in the parking lots and garages, and I can still tow a small trailer or boat and haul stuff in the back....if I can just resist lifting it and putting big tires/wheels on it, I will also have great gas mileage!

Im not buying a truck for fuel economy. Im simply trying to decide which one of the two will have the better fuel economy.

I like both trucks and Ive always been a full size truck person but Ive always been pulled towards the tacoma and now may be my chance.

I drive 60 miles round trip daily all highway. On the weekends I probably drive around 50-100 miles to various mountain bike trails, errands, gym, etc. so mix of highway and city.

Ive towed something about 3 times in my life lol so thats not really a big deal to me. All i require is 4 doors, 4x4, and around 18 mpg.

Thats being said, I just needed those questions answered so I have an idea of how the Taco measures to the F-150 gas wise. If you can get 300 miles out of say 19 gallons on a tacoma but only 450 miles out of the F-150's 38 gallon tank then I'd say thats something to consider.

My neighbor owns a 2011 f150 4x4 stock. He averages 15 mpg with his truck.
My average is 17.2 but I have a trailer and a slide in camper. If I throw out all the trailer and camper mileage I'm over 19 mpg. My gas light come on with 17.2 gallons gone.

You will get very different answers on fuel consumption as many have different driving styles and roads. Yes, the Taco has a 21 gallon tank. I can get 400 miles, and then put in about 17-18 gallons. Probably easier if you ask everybody their MPG. I can average 22, but the best I've gotten was 23.7 mpg.

Since your decision seems to be based on cost driven aspects, the Taco IS the way to go. Cost less to buy, better gas mileage, and MUCh better resale value. Also, for your needs, you do not need 4x4.

Oh, almost forgot, welcome to the nut house.

My V6 4x4 easily gets 20 mpg crusing steady on the highway, and that's with a lift and plate bumper (i.e. aerodynamics worse than stock). Stop-and-go rush hour commute gets me 16 mpg.

What part of the US are you located? The F-150 suffers less power loss at high elevations thanks to the turbo.

Off road, the Tacoma wins hands down.

Its red that is why its so low. Pry has been on the lot since last year. You could still get a DCLB 4x4 sr5 auto model for 29.5k probably. So you paying the same price unless you want a trd package.

The only thing different would be towing capacity for the ford and manuevaribility for the taco.

Gas mileage I avg about 18mpg city/highway combined. I would expect the ford to get 14 at best. Just highway I get almost 22mpg but that will vary with the trucks. Main reason I went with a taco is the mpg is way better. Those chevy and ford even tundra may say 15mpg city but realizable they pry get 11-13mpg.

If your driving as much as you say, it costs me avg about $60 to gas up and that is below 1/4 tank and I can go about 300miles. Compare that to a full size cost probably in the $90-100 range and go 400miles. I drive quite a bit with work and going mountain biking and I am glad I bought a Taco. If I would have bought a full size my wallet would be empty all the time for gas. I am already taking a hit with the taco but I can't even imagine with a full size.

I went from a 2009 Tacoma to a 2010 f150 and I love both trucks I just wanted something bigger. I also get a lot better gas mileage on my f150 than I ever did with the Tacoma. I have the 5.4 super crew 4x4 f150 and get 17 in town and 21 on the highway my Tacoma never saw those numbers. Yes it is a bigger truck and u have a lot more room but it ultimately comes down to what u need it for. I needed a bigger truck bc I had a baby on the way. And the huge backseat makes it 1000x easier to have a car seat in there. Just weigh your needs. I would get another f150.

I just traded in my 2011 Harley F150 with the 6.2L motor for my second 2nd gen taco. I'm now rolling around in an 12 TX Pro, 6spd.

    Here's my take on this:

The F150 is a great truck, and mine had every option from Ford. No doubt that when I bought my taco, I was buying a less equipped truck.

    Things to consider:

Driving that F150 in any parking lot today, at least in Colorado, was a pain in the ass. People are impatient, and those bigger trucks take more time to park, since you can't generally swing into a space.

Fuel economy wasn't horrible, I was averaging around 16 MPG, mixed. Again, I know you're looking at the EB, but just throwing it out there.

For me, and my family's situation, the F150 was more truck than we needed. I work from home, and on weekends, we always took my wife's 08 4Runner everywhere, for reasons listed above. I never towed anymore, as we sold our boat too.

What I like about that taco is the versatility. With about 500 miles, I've already been on more dirt roads than my F150 every saw, partly because of its size. I feel like I can use my truck more now than I could before, because the whole package feels more manageable.

As for gas tank fill ups...let me tell you, that when gas is $3.50+ a gallon, it really sucks filling up a 36 gallon tank. I don't care if you only do it every 2 weeks, it still hurts. Not to mention, good luck finding a gas station where you can fill a tank that size without swiping your card twice.

My vote, which should only matter to me, is for the Tacoma.
