Not that I smoke but I just noticed this. What if I did smoke? What am I supposed to do with the ashes or the cigarette butts? I would sure hate to believe that Toyota is condoning littering...or starting fires!! Or is it that my cheapo version Tacoma is exactly that. A cheapo truck? :(

On a more serious note i think its a thing of the past i wouldnt be surprised if you see just a normal stand alone 12v in the coming years instead of the combo

Interesting I never thought of that. Btw, has anybody here had a faulty lighter? Mines never stayed in when pushed down. Took it in and they said they fixed it, but I checked later on and found they did nothing. Truck is back at the dealer for service and they are trying to fix it again. Luckily I'm not a smoker or I might be pretty pissed. Still though, my 1986 pickup lighter worked 20+ years later, but my 2010 doesn't :( kinda bums me out.

My 2009 car doesn't have either. But I have three places to charge things LOL!

But seriously. If no ashtray why even put the cigarette lighter in there? I know that you can use it to charge things but why is the lit cigarette icon on it? Why didn't they just make it another port? Like in my car?

    neglect, mostly.
here in the great tobacco state of north carolina i know about a million smokers. i know no one who messes with an ashtray in their vehicle. you light it, you smoke it, thump the ashes out the window, drop the butt out the window.

bah dah bing, bah dah boom

I've actually used the lighter to start campfires while out.. Camping!

    Quite useful.

Also to light up a couple cigars when there is no lighter to be found. I hope they don't get rid of it.

Bingo! Agreed there anyways...I don't smoke either, but if I did I wouldn't wanna drop my ashes in the tray anyways and have my vehicle smell like that. I mean I guess I wouldn't mind that if I smoked, but I care about my vehicles more than that.

they quit supplying ash trays a while back. not sure if mandated or not but most if not all makes now make you buy an ash-tray like you would floor mats or some other dealer part added in at sale. they are most often something that just slips into a cupholder.

i dont smoke anymore and it still erks me. whether it was government mandated or a decision made by automakers towards public relations, just another reason for me to wonder why people i dont know care if i can freely smoke or not. weird how ciggerates are portrayed as horrible, chew is a slightly better option (phillip morris and camel started selling/ giving away chew to make new regs easier on those that enjoy tobacco) and alcohol/ pot/ anti-deppressants/ pain killers are still out portrayed as ok. still killing people. why such a negative attitude toward ciggarettes?

I had a few cars with lighters and no ashtrays, my first being a 98. You had to order the "smoker's package" the ashtray. Then as cell phones became more popular, then mp3 players, they started replacing the lighter with just an outlet. I've just got two outlets (plus USB and mini-jack). My wife's van was bought off the lot with an ashtray and lighter, plus an outlet...smoker's package. My buddy's just had two outlets and a cover where the ashtray would be...no smoker's package.

Cuz I can smell it from three cars back on the road. Why should I have to roll my windows up and turn the AC on recirc just so you can have a smoke? If I had my way it would be illegal to smoke with the windows rolled down. Put that poison into your body if that's what you choose, but leave MY lungs alone.

Yeah, I know car exhaust is poison too. But I'm contributing to that as well, so I guess that's fair.

I almost lost a job over this. My boss believes I should work in a cloud of smoke if our customer happens to be a smoker. (He does not smoke). Thankfully smoking is getting to be less popular now, and most folks don't smoke inside their own house either.

Thanks OZ and Chris for the link and the suggestions but I don't smoke, I'd rather not, and nobody will smoke in my vehicles. I just happened to notice that today and was wondering. Just didn't make sense to have the lighter (with the lit cigarette on the handle) and no ashtray.

Off topic, but You guys that do smoke gotta watch where you throw those butts when you throw them out of the window....

I've had to call the fire department 4 times on my drives to waimea because tourists would throw their ciggs into dry pastureland and start fires

Smoking has lost its luster and popularity, that's why there is no ashtray.

I like the cig lighter and hope it stays in the trucks forever. I don't smoke [a truly repugnant, life threatening habit], but on occasion I have retrieved it from the glove box and used it to make fire. :)

Also...there are other intentions for the cigarette lighter rather than just the lighter itself...

i.e. phone chargers, gps, CB radio, plenty of other things...

But I understand what you are getting at.
