That is a no brainer. ISO requires that parts are trackable through the build process. Toyota obviously had a batch of defective parts. They will know what Batch the defective parts are and into which specific VIN numbers the parts were installed in. They recall those specific VIN's to be repaired.

We can tell from the ID number what day of what year and what shift manufactured the part. On most parts we can even tell you which machine it was made and who the setup mechanic was.

There is a method to the madness, even if you don't understand it.

Just to validate my knowledge I work for a Robert Bosch LLC North America a tier one world wide automotive supplier.

Double checked.... add this to the data bank:

    12/2007 build date on mine.
2008 California built RC Base 5-lug
    No steering wheel audio
    I have a letter

Of all of the options my truck could have come with, it had to come with non-working TPMS and a recall letter :crapstorm:

Got the notice about the airbag light. Went to the dealer yesterday for the supposedly 15 min. inspection. 2.75h later, truck comes back and airbag light is still on, but my gas pedal has been hacked up by what appears to be a 3 year old with a butter knife.

Apparently my spiral spring has a red tab on it, and it's only the ones with a yellow tab on it that are affected by the recall. That was the explanation from the service adviser.

    What a waste of time.

Uh, no. there is no issue with color coding, they actually have to take the steering cover off to inspect the lot number on the label. If you check the link i posted previous to you, i have supplied as much info as possible there in hopes of helping with stuff like this. If that is what they told you, go to a different dealer cause they dont seem to know what they are talking about. I WILL double check the recall paperwork right now, but the only thing we are looking for is literally 1/ONE digit to determine if it needs to be replaced.

So, i just reread the entire recall paperwork, there is nothing whatsoever stated in it regarding "color" of connectors or tabs or anything else for that matter. This is what it says when it comes down to the actual inspection:

Compare the lot number on the spiral cable to the

illustration. Does the spiral cable digit match any of the 5

    patterns?

YES Replace the spiral cable. Refer to TIS for

    instructions on

    spiral cable replacement

    .

NO The spiral cable is not affected. Campaign

    complete

The only digit relevant to this inspection

    is the one shown highlighted.

Approximately 85-90% of all vehicles will

require spiral cable replacement. If initial

    inspection indicates that replacement is

    not necessary, reconfirm the inspection

    was performed correctly.

I have an 07. Not a sport, no steering wheel controls. Airbag light has been on for quite some time.

Got a letter several months ago notifying me of the recall. It also said that Toyota is currently working on the remedy, and I will receive a 2nd notification via snail mail when parts are ready and preparations are complete.

Unless I can head to the dealer with that letter in hand, I don't intend to contact them at all.

I can't imagine Toyota is sending these letters to persons not corresponding to certain VIN numbers affected by the faulty parts. It's taking forever, but I've got a piece of electrical tape over the light and I generally forget about it anyway. I really don't care about the safety aspect of how functional the airbags are, which is why I won't chance a repair bill I have to pay for.

Oh, by the way, cruise control has worked fine since new.

The remedy is available now, but depending on your distance to the dealer, contact them to verify they have the parts in stock. If they do, depending on how bust the shop is, i can personally do the recall in like 30 minutes, but it takes time to get the truck in the shop. Keep this in mind when it comes to how long the total repair takes.

So this means that we should be getting the second letter? What if we have already had the clock spring replaced?

    I appreciate your info, thanks!

If I remember right, I read somewhere on here that it's possible for them to replace the clock spring with an 'old' design (to rectify the light short term) and then replace it again once new versions are released. By your response I take it this is nonsense?

Also, does it make sense that my cruise control is functional with a faulty clock spring?

Thanks again for your info, +1 for you:thumbsup:

Thanks for the info. I normally take all info from service advisers with a grain of salt. You should have heard his response when I asked details about why they had to re-program my ECU.

I am curious if there's a difference between the Canadian recall procedure and U.S.?! How difficult is it for me to pop the cover off the steering wheel so I can get you a picture of the spiral cable serial #?

Your ECU reprogram and accelerator pedal trimming was the old "uncontrolled acceleration because of the floor mats" recall.

Their solution was twofold... trim the pedal so the floor mat is less likely to jam it, and reprogram the ECU. If the brake is applied with the accelerator greater than some percentage (25%?), the ECU cuts the engine to idle.

You can not do a "powerbrake burnout" on a post-recall Toyota (why you would want to is beyond me... but you can't).

Give it a try... Get going up a grade, ramp up the throttle to get some acceleration, then apply the brake.

Brake depressed + accel depressed more than 1/3 + both depressed for more than 0.5s = accel override.

The advisor said the reprogramming was to recalibrate the accel because they have to cut the foam behind the carpet under the accel, because the accel can now be depressed further as part of the campaign...

... I asked more or less for him to humor me. What a load of bs these guys put out. I can't wait for the customer survey.

Pretty sure that person was feeding you BS. There was a recall that had to to with unintended acceleration which resulted in "allegedly" carpet being stuck over the gas pedal or under the gas pedal or something to do with the gas pedal...

The only reason why they need to reprogram your computer is to electronically program it in such a way so that when you press brake pedal and gas at the same time it drops RPM like crazy. It becomes particularly annoying when you need to enter traffic when you are at the stop light or need to make a right turn onto major road and you ride your brake pedal and ride it and ride it and then slam onto the gas pedal and nothing happens...nothing happens...nothing happens and just a quarter of a second before car is about to crash into the back of your truck your car takes off like its on steroids because you floored that gas pedal.

It took me a good month or two to get used to that stuff.

And while we are on topic of recalls... 5 months and not a peep from Toyota...

Yep, I still haven't heard a peep on mine. Even though the "new" '08 is also covered under the recall, since the light isn't on yet, apparently I get to wait and wait and wait and wait...

First, there is a website previously mentioned in this thread that will tell you if your truck is included or not, second, you could click the thread link I posted and read what I put up regarding this recall, or 3rd, call your damn dealer and ask! Not sure why anyone would be getting mad because Toyota is replacing a defective part, as I previously stated, the remedy is available, the light does not have to be on to get the recall done. This is a very simple recall and really shouldn't be causing so much stink.

... not sure if this was posted already but for the Spiral cable recall -as far as I know - it only applies to vehicles WITHOUT steering wheel controls i.e. volume, mode, scroll ^ v -stuff like that. if u just got a plain steering wheel with no controls, then it might be applicable depending on VIN range.

Do we know this for a fact, or is this just speculation because out of the couple of hundred thousand letters that went out, 20 TW users that have wheel controls didn't get a letter and 60 who don't have controls got one?

If it's just speculation, let's make sure that it is very clear that it is speculation. We don't need to be spreading misinformation.

Regardless, both of mine haven't had the steering wheel controls, and the website says both were covered by the recall.

Speaking of the website, here it is all the way back from page 7:
