truck is getting dropped off tomorrow for the clutch install. told the shop to check the shifter and the pedal while they're tearing into it so I'm hoping it'll feel like a whole new transmission when I get it back.

 

How many miles do you have on your truck?

Is this just a clutch replacement, or are there other problems?

I've got 93K on mine, on the original clutch; I'm wondering how long they'll go normally.

 

a little over 180k on my original.

So basically I'll be in mid-60's when it's time to replace my clutch.


I'm OK with that.

 

I've got 110k miles on the truck. I tend to (ab)use the clutch with plenty of compression braking and shitty transitioning. I didn't have to replace my brake pads until 95k miles if that tells you anything.

The dealership told me there wasn't much left on it last time I took it in. A friend who knows Toyotas inside and out told me the dealership has no external indicator to know that so unless they opened up the bell housing, they were guessing. However, I'm pretty sure I've had it slip twice now. Both instances, I was on dry pavement, revs went up, speed went down, then it'd suddenly grab and take off with no barking of the tires.

Of course the mechanic I took it to to do the work said he could take off in 3rd gear with no problem. I told him since I had the parts might as well install them.

just got the call and the clutch install was a success. The mechanic said the old clutch was pretty much toast. Going to have to stop treating my truck like a sports car.

 

hoo-boy. Clutch plate was wore down to the rivets. The fly wheel had plenty of scuff marks. I should have taken some pictures.

The new clutch feels so different. Way less pedal pressure needed. Not disreputing the shop I took it to but being the first time that I used them makes me just a wee bit nervous that everything is good. So far, it holds and drives fine. Going to contact Marlin Crawlers to see about the pedal pressure just to be sure.

Of course, it looks like I need a new starter. I'm guessing it's used to the old flywheel teeth. Got me a weekend project now.

 

Nice. Good luck! During my tranny swap the 2 starter bolts were the biggest pain! lol. Even worse than the top couple bolts on the bellhousing! Just be prepared with a good hunk of time, good selection of extensions, a swivel, and some PB blaster will help as well...
