This is obviously going to end badly with people speaking badly of churches, which in turn results in religious arguments and ends up getting this thread locked. Seriously some people need to grow up. If you have an anti religious view, okay. But if your are going to go overboard with it and ridicule religion, just leave, there is no use for you.

Ha ha, love the comments guys. But seriously, did you even read what I wrote or just pick one sentence from a paragraph before you jumped on 'lots of people not affiliated with churches do awesome terrific stuff' or 'the catholic church is bad so very very bad in history...derp' come on, give me a break. If you want to come on a public forum and throw out blanketed comments about 'all churches' or religion in general, you have to back it up. I still don't think anyone of ya thought of how churches through history have done incredibly great things and probably got you where you are today directly or indirectly (oh but that doesn't matter does it?). Obviously the right to freedom of religion was something not welcome in most lands until recent times, hence the founding of the great US of A built by courageous men and women of vast cultural and religious diversity. And to not give credit where it is due is just plain old ignorant, learn your history, the WHOLE picture ffs. And, I didn't come here attacking atheists like Sassy for not helping others. But lets face it, when was the last time the 'Atheist League of America' lined up (with their 'tons of members') to feed the poor or rallied members to help in times of devastation? Your leader Bill Maher is too busy smoking pot and telling people they're stupid for getting married (why buy the cow when you can drink the milk free ha ha heho duh snort... Some of the comments on how churches are run and where the money goes, etc. is ridonkulous, if you don't 'really' know, then don't shoot your mouth off like you do or blindly criticize from the outside. Slight insinuations of clergy becoming wealthy off of tax free monies? That's f'ing laughable. Think I am holier than thou Sassy? I just call it like I see it, say something foolish, get it thrown in your face. For Leggo, sorry dude, you don't know diddly about diddly or maybe you do and you just got an agenda. If you took the time to actually research those churches you are soooo 'suspect of' you would see they do lots of amazing things (obviously or they wouldn't have lots and lots of members - oh unless they are just all so blindly stupid unlike you who knows sooo much better then them that you could tell them how to live a much better life - right lol). The Morman church makes money from their member in donations off their income and through large donations made by their own members who become successful later in life, wtf do you care? BYU is an incredible school that's given higher education to millions since it's it's inception Morman or not. Quite frankly I would prefer to have a Morman neighbor (or a Buddhist, or Catholic, or Protestant or) who gave 2 shits about his community, his country, his government, and tries to make things better then a lot of other groups I can think of. You think the money you get from the government to help you isn't based on Christian values? Again, learn your history because it wasn't a scientist or magic that created a system to help the needy in this country. Go back 200 years in Europe, Asia or any other area and see where you'd be if you were indigent then and there and thank your lucky stars. There is a lot worse in this world, why not attack our criminal system? I don't know why there are gyms and tv's in prison, do you? Or the government waste and corruption, I don't see the point in slamming groups that do way more good than bad. And 'yes' individuals in organizations do shitty things, there are aholes, crooks, liars and douchebags everywhere, but that doesn't make up the majority of hundreds of thousands or millions that are seeking their own answers in a country (countries) where they are free to do so...

For the last part of my rant for tonight, I will say this - I would rather give my money to a church as a donation and know it's going to help people who need it rather than to a governement that waists it on the most frivoulous spending that boggles the mind. Yes, I am one of those who believes the Fire Chief in my town who makes 180k a year is over paid. I don't think lifegaurds in the OC should make 100k a year. I don't think Congress should be paid a pension after 5 years of medium of their highest 3 years of salary (for the rest of their lives). I could go on, but it's too easy to attack the truly corrupt, probably best to just stick to the priest walking around giving counseling to the homeless or maybe cooking them a meal...besides when they get back to their castles they can count the boxes of jewels and gold they have from their greedy donations that fall regularly from the sky like rainbows.

I completely agree with you bro, but it took me an hour to read your post. I believe we feel the same way, but lets just chill. Continuing an argument makes no progress though. Don't let children on the internet piss you off.

I can see the end of this thread now. The swarm of nasty comments is pursuing.

Sorry bud, wrote that quickly before crashing out for the night. Didn't put a lot of thought about the grammar or over all appearance but more importantly just getting the words put down...

yes, I read your entire post before I pointed out your holier than thou attitude.
I attended roman catholic schools from kindergarten to grade 12, I was also baptized and confirmed in the catholic church. now, I am indeed an atheist. Bill Maher is a comedian, not a leader of atheists. Bill Gates is an atheist, and he's likely the biggest philanthropist in the world. no he's not donating in the name of atheism, good deeds don't require the attachment of theism or atheism.
