Can any of the Toyota Techs here shed some light on this, about 4000 miles ago i got oil change , the Mechanic must have left off the Oil cap, the Oil light in the dash did not come on at all , i noticed some faint loss, in power, during accelaration, since the oil change, there was some oil loss about 3/4 quart, some oil splater under the hood and on the wheelwell area , my question ,is how was it, i only lost so little oil in 4000 miles given the fact the cap was off, and could the oilcap being off, cause power loss in the engine ?

I'm no toyota tech, but as far as I know...

The oil light won't go on unless you lose oil pressure, for example if you lost enough oil that the oil pan went dry and the pump would suck in air and lose oil pressure.

You only lose a minimal amount of oil because its whatever gets flung up through the hole that escapes.

No real reason to cause a loss of power. it would actually vent your valvecover so the pcv valve isnt recirculating in to the intake. (theoretically more power, but negligble)

    Check Build Thread!!
Unsure about the aformentioned powerloss, but Vigo's answers to all your other questions are spot on.

You never opened the hood in 4000 miles ? You should always check things after having any service done.

Professional being the key word here. I doubt you're going to find that at a dealer. Find a professional in your area to do it, and then let the dealer pay. Of course, clear this with your dealer first.

I think it's a good idea if you let someone else change your oil to always check for proper oil level when you get home. That will allow you to know the proper amount of oil was put in + you can make sure the oil cap was put back on.

Loss of power would be from not having a vacuum with the oil cap on.

Vacuum would be in the intake manifold, not the valvecover. That's why it has a PCV valve, positive crankcase ventilation.

without the cap it would sucking a lot of wind into that valve cover. hence no sealed system. pcv is looking for engine fumes not fresh air. id bet it caused some lack of power

This thread is why i do my own oil changes not worth the chances of someone else mistakes. If your oil changes are free then spot check the mechanic next time at least that's what id do. The DIY Oil Change thread is great Chris did a nice job and included torque specs. He also did research on a ton of different oil filters which led me to believe that the Toyota Stock filter is best. Plus you get the piece of mind that the job was done to your standards. Hope this helps :D

Lack of power would be cause by lack of pressure in your crank case. It is meant to be sealed and pressure controlled by the PCV.

You only lost little oil due to how far it has to travel. If you had a cap right on the valve cover, by the timing chain, the chain itself would fling oil out, along with oil channels for the cams. Toyota also put a small "guard" between the valve cover and filler. This also helps prevent splash out in case of accidentally leaving off the oil cap.

Yeah, the long filler neck probably saved you from a bigger mess.

    Hi all.

One of the reasons I do my own oil changes is I would feel compelled to check everything over (after they were done) to the point that I might as well changed it myself anyway ...

Op, if your engine is the 1GR-FE it can lose 1.5 liters before it is at the add mark (assuming it was at the full mark to start with). So 3/4 of a liter is OK.

Where did the oil cap end up. I would be concerned it is lodged somewhere ...

    Cheers
    Ray.
