limited slip differential is a differential locker on the rear axel. Google it for a solid description.

Regear means shanging the gear ratios of your truck to deliver enough power to turn the tires. You need to regear if you lift high or run large tires

I always thought it was a yes, especially with a 4 banger. It is also dependant on the tire size you run but others will correct me if I am wrong

Maybe I'm missing something here, since I have a gen 1 with a 2.7L. Why would a lift require a regear? Maybe because it increases wind resistance? I suppose that would make a difference on the highway.

Your tire size may require lower a lower diff gear (higher ratio), and you may be required to add a lift to fit your tires under the body, but I've never heard of the lift requiring lower gears.

Find out what your diff gear is. Your vin carrires that information and there are guys on this forum who can tell you what gears you have from that. My pickup runs 31X10.50s, which is the largest tire most tire places will mount on it (liability issuses, they tell me). I do just fine. As a matter of fact, I just added 2.5" of lift and intend to go with 33s in the near future. My '00 TRD has a 4.30:1 diff and a manual 5 speed trans behind a 2.7L four-banger. I run 2750 rpm at 65mph on the highway and come in right at 22mpg. My speedo reads about 67 at 65mph by the GPS, so I figure going to 33s will probably correct that as well as bring my rpms down at 65mph. With the 4.30 rear, I should have satisfactory power for my driving, and I have low range for messing in the muck.

Somewhere on this forum there is a good tire size calculator that relates diff gears to tire size and a range of probable satisfactory performance, relative to stock performance. Look around a bit. You'll find it.

Actually the automatic trans supplied trucks have a 3:58 rear gear ratio and the manual trasmission trucks have a 3:31 rear. This allows the auto trucks a bit more mechanical advantage to overcome the big tires or/and lift kit. The auto's torque converter also helps with higher launch rpm.

The height of your lift doesn't matter at all regarding gearing. The tire size is what matters. Your tire size can determine the amount of lift you need, though.

Like I said before, you can determine exactly what gear ratio your diffs carry by the vehicle identification number (VIN). There are several gear ratios Toyota puts into their trucks, depending on the year, options package, trans, engine, and customer special orders. My pickup being a TRD gives me an electric locker rear diff, the 4.30:1 gear ratio, and Bilstein shocks (among a couple other things). Before you decide what tires to put on, figure out what your gearing is and then check out the TIRE SIZE CALCULATOR under the "Mods and Tutorials" button at the top of this page. You'll save yourself a lot of headaches if you will do some figuring before you order.

Well said. The tires are what affect the gearing more than anything else. Here's a before and after of mine. 3" Readylift with 31x10.5x15. It's a base model Taco (standard trans, 4 cly, etc.). Yes, you can notice a power loss, but not enough for me to regret doing it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Every time I see a truck w/ the Readylift Kit installed the more I want to lift my truck. I like your setup.
