I got my shell mostly for my dogs, so the vented windoors was a must. Being a short bed, ARE, and snugtop were my only choices. I chose snugtop and couldnt be happier!
    +1 for vented windoors!

You can see the where the lip starts, which is 1 1/2" below the top of the bed rail. I'm going to try to edit this pic to point out the elevation points I'm refering to.

That looks like it would help prevent water leakage from driven rain quite a bit. If you happen to be close by your truck again when you have your camera with you, could you snap a pic showing a little more of the exterior from a similar angle. I'm going to call my dealer to let him know I'd like to have this done when I order my shell. Thanks again, I really appreciate this info.

The ARE fiberglass shells come over the edge of the bed on the current Tacomas also.

There is something to be aware of with Windoors and the Leer 180 shell. There is a foot note on their site about the windoors may not fit the custom recesses of the fiberglass. In other words Leer can't assure the customer that the windoors will fit perfectly; i.e. the windoor frame may be oval, but the fiberglass recess that it's set into is a trapezoid shape.

I did a lot of research and spoke to a lot of people (including people at the Leer plant) and for this reason I chose A.R.E.

There is a member here. "Monkey Face" who posted a pic of his Leer 180 and windoors.

    EDIT:

I have an ARE with vented windoors and love it! I have slept back there, transport my dogs back there, and recently transported goats back there. I got my ARE used on Craigslist so I don't know what the options added to the cost. But I never want to have a cap without vented windoors.

I spoke with both the Leer Factory and Dealer regarding this today. Both told me that the shell already comes with a flare on the bottom from the factory, and they will not make it longer than what comes standard from the factory. The reason they stated was that if it came down any lower that it may be possible for it to rub / damage the paint on the vehicle should the shell ever shift / or bounce up and down for some reason.

They did say however, that some people do request that the flare be trimmed so the shell fits flush on the bedrail with no overhang for asthetic purposes, which they apparently will do. Perhaps this is what Ryder was referring to by having his flare longer.

It's true that if the cap edge was lower , it could touch the body .

I will take a pic after I finish my lunch .

I'm not trying to sway you away from LEER as I think most manufacturers make a comparable product, but here are a few photos of my ARE that I found on my phone.

Might help you visualize fit and finish.

Thanks for the additional info guys, really do appreciate it. I haven't priced out the A.R.E. MX yet as my local dealer is out of town until Monday, he's a one man show so the whole place is closed. From what I've read, I believe A.R.E. is a bit more pricey for comparable products, but I still want to see what they have to offer.

LEER Shell with dome lights operated with 3 way switches, aux backup lights with relay and 3 position switch, modified wiring to compass/temp display and clock to include switch that disables dimming function (poor man's DRL solution), Scan Gauge 2
That's what mine looks like as well. It does not bother me, but I can see how others would be unhappy. I knew going in and decided it wasn't a big deal.

Since I bought mine two years ago I have seen other LEER shells with vented windoors that appear to be surface mounted.....the shell does not have a recess. But so far I haven't seen a Tacoma, just Chevys. Might be a Chevy thing. Better ask before putting your money down. Snugtop seems to always be surface mounted. ARE appears to be recessed, but the recesses fit correctly.

Might be that the windoors are patented and made by only one supplier. ARE may have got to them first?

I got them on both sides when I bought my cap. Sorry, I'm not sure how much they are to buy individually.
