So I am working with some 3/16 plate and .120 wall tubing (1.5" OD). I swapped the welder to .035 wire and went to town.

I have a question. The welder ( Lincoln Pro Mig 180 Dual) came with .025 wire that I had been using for other projects with thinner metal. The welds always came out nice a clean ( CO2/Argon mix).

I picked up a roll of .035 Hobart wire form TS yesterday and played with it some on a few practice pieces. The welds looke OK ( iad to play with the speed), but I am getting a brown dusty residue that I did not get before. I brushes off and you cannot tell if I wire wheel it.

Is this due to the wire, or possible the gun position? ( I am working on a better technique for tubing) I usually weld with a forearm down, but I guess I need to float to do this.

Thanks for the input in advance

    Justin

It almost sounds like the stick out is too much or you're not feeding the wire fast enough.

Yeah it happens to me with 1/4" plate when i have the voltage up and the wire speed down I just hit the with a wire wheel after and it's good to go.

Nice thread, never noticed it before.

I used to repair welders/plasma cutters for a living.

Keep up the good welds guys!

    Thanks,

Thats exactly my scenario, Max power and a slower feed. I tried to up the speed a little, but I was getting some build up. I also checked the regulator to make sure the gas flow was high enough, and it all looked ok.

I can brush it off, I was just curious as to what caused it. It will be painted anyway.

On another note ( for you guys without a Torchmate ;)), do you have a good source for tabs and other small laser/plasma/waterjet cut parts? I have been looking at A&A manufacturing and they carry some pretty trick things.

I get that brown dusty residue around my welds a lot. I do like running hot and fast though, so thats probably it. Simply brushes off so I wouldn't think twice about it I'd say it just means you're running nice hot solid welds.

If you need miscellaneous tabs/etc, sketch what you need and pm me. I can cut and ship flat rate for reasonable prices. Up to 3/4" thick steel(recovery points?), and 1/2" aluminum parts.

That's what I like to see! Finally getting the hang of this stick welding thing. 7018 rod at about 90 amps.

1/8" 7018 rod and weave is how i do uphill vertical in almost any situtation. Keep a short arc and work slow to build shielfs, stay at your 90 amps and you should be able to make some clean/strong welds in no time.

Yeah that's how I've been doing it, Just not very consistent yet. Just need more practice.

edit: I wonder if the fact that these rods are probably 4+ years old and have been in open air the entire time is messing with things? Our humidity rarely gets over 20% but still.

That would have a affect to it, there still usable but as you are having issues with being consistent, im betting thats not helping. I have used brand new rods and have had the same issues, gets frustrating.

You could also toss the rod into a rod oven or other heat source to dry them out.

Well I have probably 6 or 7 lbs of this rod left, and about 10 lbs of 6011 at my disposal to practice with so until I actually weld an actual project with stick the old rod will do.

I also tried aluminum stick the other day, holy cow the entire rod is gone in about 10 seconds! It makes pretty welds though.

Just joined this group and saw this. I like to weld. And do some occasional blacksmithing when it is not to hot outside to fire up the gas forge. Just started into metal work a year or two ago. Can't wait to weld up a bumper for my new (to me) Prerunner. Here is a pic of the last thing I made up. Needed something to shoot at with the pistols when I had some guys from work come over to blow off some steam.....and blow up some homemade tannerite. Just some old leftover angle I had laying around. And yes I was careful with the galvanized coating.
