I like engine braking. I drive in 1st or 2nd all the time just so I can get the engine braking. I do not have the $30 for brake pads so I like the tranny take care of this for me. When I get on the highway I do shift into 3rd.

What we've been discussing is engine braking, not the "brake assist" feature. Real "brake assist" is meant for panic braking scenarios.

Engine braking is when the transmission shifts to a lower gear (either automatically through shift logic or by the driver slapping the shifter D>4>3 etc.). The wheels will try to drive the engine to a higher rpm. However, because the throttle is closed, the pistons pump air and encounter resistance, slowing down the truck.

If Jimmy cracked corn and he didn't care. Then why did he write a song about it?

Hah! Good shot. You need special brake tools to DIY drum brake pad replacement. It's just a huge pain in the ass compared to disc pad replacement.

Drums are ancient technology. I bet the Tacoma is the only Toyota vehicle that is not 4-wheel disc brakes, unless Toyota makes a bus.

I like the engine brake..I'm a truck driver so I'm all for engine brakes, but sometimes I would like to just coast down a hill a bit longer...but it's whatever

the only real tool that anyone may need to make things truly hassle free is a brake spring compressor tool. but even then you can get a way with using a pair of regular pliers instead. i feel the brakes shoes on the 2nd gen tacos are easy to replace as a DIY project at home.

    Brakes are cheaper than transmissions!

I hate the rear drums. Short stopping distance great.....but the fronts need to be bigger and rests need to be discs. They are outdated, my park brake simply does not work well. Disc for braking, inner drum for park brake is what's needed.

Engine braking doesnt hurt the transmission. Thats what they are built for. As for the drums.....they have more sq. inches of surface area than disk brakes. The only drawback to them, is they are heavey, and dont shed heat as quickly as disk brakes. As for your parking bake, try adjusting it.

Just because you put Nikes on a fat kid doesn't mean he's going to stop any faster. The limiting factor isn't the shoes... it's that the fat kid is fat.

I said brakes are cheaper than transmissions. I did not say "engine braking hurts your transmission".

Thanks dude. I'm an automotive technician. Drums have more "contact patch", but pads and rotors grab harder. Ever gotten your drum brakes wet and full of mud? They almost stop working. Discs are far superior. That's why you don't see drums on the front. They have more drawbacks then just being heavy, and inefficient cooling.

Your comment "Brakes are cheaper than transmissions" eluded to the tranny being harmed by engine braking. Also, It doesnt matter to me if you are an "automotive technician" or not. First, Ive been around this shit longer than you have been alive. Second, there are far more people who ARENT auto techs who know much more than those who are. The Tacoma STILL has best in class braking. Drum brakesare less expensive, and seem to provide the stopping power required for the vehicle. Any engine braking isnt going to affect the tranny at all. Being a tech, you should know that if your park brake isnt working correctly, you atart with propperly adjusting it. No difference between the park brake we have, vs. the park brake on a rear disk vehicle (in most casses). The use a drum brake for the parking. As for getting the brakes wet, I have noticed no different braking impedment with my trucks brakes being wet, vs. my cars (Cars have/had 4 wheel disk).
