Fire Extinguisher...get one!

Yeah, inspect the tank for cracks and wear (you can rub through a tank if it vibrates against something enough), inspect for pressure, inspect the end of the hose or nozzle to make sure it's not caked up with mud or debris, inspect to make sure you have the pin in and the valve is still solid and not broken or cracked. Recommended to inspect every month, depending, but that's a good starting off point.

edit: also check your mounts to make sure they're solid but easy to remove the extinguisher still

This is... well it's a lot. I think 4 ten pound units. Theres also two more hand held 10 pound units outside the cab. On the electric drive there is a dry chem and a halon.

this was 15+ 5lb abc extinguishers and 10+ 10lb abc ext at a home depot in temecula that i serviced last month. i service and sell fire extinguishers for a living so of course have numerous extinguishers in my home and of course on my truck. the problem with trying to mandate fire extinguishers on all vehicles not just for commercial use like all 18 wheelers, cement trucks, and so on, is that you would then have to regulate the service of said fire extinguishers. meaning you would have to have the fire department or chp do inspections on every vehicle once a year just like what has to be done in all business open to the public.

 

If you fall under MSHA then under CFR 46 or whatnot I believe they can have a licensed company inspect them, doesn't have to be gov or MSHA. So yeah it would be a huge ordeal but I don't think they'd have to set it up to have the gov do it necessarily just certified individuals. I'm not sure what the DOT and FMSCA etc require of over the road trucks I was just thinking they don't have to make it like the rest for autos and light vehicles.

That being said I think it'd be absurd to force everyone to carry extinguishers anyway. It's a good idea, but we don't need more mandates.

 

and this was on the 91 west freeway the other day in corona right after the 57 fwy this ford focus rear ended a dodge truck in the fast lane and when i pulled up the whole engine compartment was in flames and was dropping smoldering plastic and engine parts on to the freeway, i was in my work truck, so had 20+ extinguishers on me. it took 2 full 10lb to put it out

 

yes that is exactly what i do for a living im licensed thru the state Fire Marshall of California to service/inspect fire extinguishers. And the only difference between D.O.T.extinguishers and non D.O.T. extinguishers is a D.O.T. extinguisher is internally inspected every year, meaning it needs to be fired off and serviced, and hydro tested every 5 years, where as is a extinguisher not on a vehicle is internally serviced every 6 years and hydro tested every 12 years. but just like in business though, a company like mine would do the service but we cant force a business to let us service the extinguishers that is done by the fire department.

 

I had a feeling that in all likelihood it would take more than what is normally carried. I carry one now, and a second (hell or even a third) when I get around to/afford it.

 

that and i would suggest buying a commercial grade 5lb abc extinguishers not the 2 1/2 lb kidde fire extinguishers(the small white ones) that most of you guys have now those extinguishers have the internal parts of a kids play toy even the threads on the head of the extinguisher are plastic and have been known to corrode over time and actually blow the head off

I bought a couple Home Depot specials for the house once and within a year I had a BBQ grill fire, I grabbed the first one and it was completely empty(never used it before) and the other was just enough to get the fire down. The next week I was able to get some 5lb commercial grade extinguishers from guy who services the extinguishers at my job. It's not fun standing in front a fire with a "new" extinguisher and have it not work. I was furious.

A seat belt cutter/emergency tool is a great item to keep in the center console. That way you can cut your seatbelt if stuck and even break the glass if necessary. This would also give you a little more freedom with the location of an extinguisher in the cab.

 

Yeah I have the kidde more like kiddy 2.5 pound in the bed of my Tacoma. My work truck has a nice amerex 2.5 pound (supposed to be 5 lbs) in the bed. The kidde one has oily residue near the valve and feels like cheap shit compared to the nice aluminum amerex one. They both see a lot of rough shitty roads and abuse.

 

It's always good to inspect your fire extinguisher every month. Where I work, the company that owns them comes out once a year. The Health & Safety Committee that I work on at work, we inspect them every month. In the 3 years that I have been on the Committee I've only found one fire extinguisher empty(in the red, not the green). Got it changed out within a matter of moments and we were good to go again.

So for everyone who hasn't check them on a regular basis it's a good time to get into the routine of it. I couldn't imagine going to put out a fire and the extinguisher not working because it wasn't inspected more often than once a year. Those few minutes a month someone takes to inspect could give you or someone else those few minutes more to possibly be saved, be revived and be able to live and breath another day.

 

I keep a super dinky 16oz foaming fire extinguisher in the pouch behind the driver's seat.

This is a great thread and I'm going to get fire extinguishers in both of our cars this week. I know that you are all talking about larger and higher capacity extinguishers, but does any one know if there are any decent extinguishers that will fit in the bottle holders in the sides of the doors?

 

I don't know if they make anything that small. Personally though I wouldn't want something that compressed in that small of an area, especially if I am hit from the side in an accident. All I can think of is being hit in the side and having the extinguisher explode from the pressure between two vehicles.
