Did this today at 104000 miles, looks like the previous 2 owners new had them replaced. NGKs were on the driver's side, Denso's on the passenger's side. They were all gapped around .06 or so.

Use a wrench with inch pounds, and convert to ft.-lbs.. 12 inch pounds per foot pound.

Yeah sorry ment to say it looked like they had never been replaced. I was slightly worried when I was taking them out that something bad would happen, but it went really smooth. I guess that's what you get when you buy a Toyota from a ford dealership.

Great write up. I've been needing to get this done, but now I plan on doing it myself, thanks!

Is spark plug replacement just a milage-driven thing? i.e. if I reach 3 years long before reaching 30k, is there any benefit to changing the plugs?

Milage only. Some people go by time, but the plugs dont wear out if the engine isnt running.

I'm new here and really like the feel of this group. My 2007 V6 Prerunner maintenance guide says the plugs need to be changed at 120K miles. You guys are saying 30K. Why the difference? I have read the terms Gen 1 and Gen 2. Could this be the difference? What is a Gen 1 vs. Gen 2?

Your SMG does call for the plugs to be replaced at 120K. However, it also calls for them to be swapped out at 30K, 60K, and 90K.

The OEM spark plug electrodes are copper, a soft metal. They are eroded quite a bit over time compared to a platinum or iridium electrode plug.

Thanks Chris 4X4 for the write-up. Just changed my plugs on my 09 TRD OR with 28900 miles. Piece of cake because of your clear instructions and great pictures. Plugs looked good, front passenger had a little oil on the threads, but it really didn't look like anything to be concerned about. Now, on to front and rear diff, x-fer case, and tranny.:)

It sounds more like an Add for iridiumplatinum plugs. Also, the mention of distributerless ignitions having lower voltage is false. Most modern electric ignitions are over 55,000 volts to the plug. this is in the rhelm of high performance ignitions not long ago. He also seems to steer clear of Copper plugs giving a larger/hotter spark vs. the other types of plugs. AND, The image of the worn plug he shown, leads people to think that its an OE Copper plug at 30k miles. The plug he showed looks to be run under a poorly fueld condition, and for much too long.

Hmmm I missed the mention of distributorless ignitions the first time I watched it

I had the truck to the dealer for a minor post delivery repair and I spoke to the service adviser and you are correct in the 30K mile plug replacement. But, my service manual only mentions the replacement at 120K.
This group is great. Thanks for all the participation from everyone. This is addicting!
