    May be kind of tough without drilling additional holes. I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow, if I can't think of anything I'll just put it in the recovery equipment box...

    Small piece of 2 inch steel strap welded to a few pieces the size of the opening in the base. Drill a hole in both sides and run a pin through it. Small hole in the top of the strap for a bolt to go though to mount to a bed rail. If you can follow that.

    Forgive the hasty paint CAD but you get the idea.

    That sounds similar to one way I was considering. I've got a couple other ideas as well.
    The one you mention might be the cheapest/easiest, but I may come up with a more secure method also

    Simple and secure, Plus it works great for people with tonneau covers. :D Hell, you could add a small lip on the back side just far enough below the hole for the bed rail mount to allow it to lock under the bed rail and not move side to side like a pendulum.
