Painting Engine Cover

So, I've seen a few people do this and paint match there trucks. I really like the look, but since my truck is so dark, I Went with red after seeing the same color truck as mine do it with red.

Time to get started

First I removed the cover, and washed with dish soap and warm water. (as you always should)

Jax, My dog, decided to help me...



Taped off the sections I didn't want to sand, and then sanded the rest with 120 grit.



Finished taping everything and ready for the primer





First coat of primer

Time to clean house! Lookin boss!

Took me about 2 days with drying times and all. I almost regret sanding due to the rough look I got a few times. In between coats I used 220 grit. Totaly worth the time. 15$ worth of paint and sand paper.

Looks great...I've been bouncing that idea around for awhile and I think you just sold me on it.

 

Totally worth it! I was sure it was going to be a big pain before i started, and really, besides waiting patiently for the paint to dry, It was a breeze! The only frustrating part is the sanding... My hand was cramping bad while I sanded... expecially between coats. That might not be an issue for those who have power sanders, but I live in a 1 bedroom apartment and have limited space. If you do it, post pictures please!

 

red adds +5 hp, too. Good choice.

painted mine today.
wet sand, primer, chrome, clear and then plasti dip metalizer.




this is my first crack at it. i think i may go with some different colors later on.

That does look pretty cool. I really like the red...but I would suggest wet sanding with 1000 grit between coats. You'll get a much smoother final coat

 

Love it. Gives the engine bay some spirit.

 

I painted the center of mine instead of the outside.



Wish I did more prep work on it though because it's very fragile (easy to scratch)... But I was kinda drunk.

I will try the sanding between coats next weekend if I get time. Think I may add a splash of color to it...

 

Man, You did a great paint job on the Grey. I even like that Extra stripe that you've added. The reason I chose red was because, With my truck being the dark Mag Grey, I felt that it really need a high contrast color to set it off (other than chrome) and by adding the red to the Engine Cover, It makes it stand out, but not so "In your Face." To be honest, i feel that the grey makes it too dark. There is no contrast, but never the less, I think it looks good. Also seen some with bright blue, and that looks nice too!

hmm might have to do this. what color goes good with silver?

 

What products did you use? That looks as close to perfect (for what I want to do to my truck) as I've seen.
