I have a 2008 Tacoma. There is a recall for a spiral cable assembly. According to the Toyota for owners site
This is an important Safety Recall. Please contact your authorized Toyota dealer, as soon as possible, and make an appointment to have the Spiral Cable Assembly Inspected and, if necessary, replaced at NO CHARGE to you. Well I was wondering if this is really something I should do, And I hope that I do not infuriate anyone for asking. The problem I have is that I had an oil change at the local (close by Toyota Dealership) about seven months ago, and I had some problems with the service. Then Last Friday I checked my oil and the oil on the dip stick looked brown. The other times I had checked the oil it was always new looking to me. And so this last friday I decided to get the oil changed at a Toyota Dealership thirty miles away and in another town. And I had called beforehand and they looked up my (wifes) Tacoma and they said they would do the oil change and the recalls. So I get over there and they say that a person came in in the morning and got the last of their Spiral cable part. for the recall. So I go ahead and get the oil change as per my wifes request. During the oil change I ask the service shedualler person if I really have to have the spiral cable done at all. and he comes back at me with You do not have to do anything I do not care if you do anything Bla bla bla and in a tone of voice that I do not like. So Should I take the Tacoma back to the thirty miles away place or do it here locally I am afraid of both places now I just do not want them to hurt my wifes tacoma. I think that in the future I will have to talk my wife into letting me do the oil changes. Any helpful advice would be much appreciated thanks

The recall letter I received from Toyota for my 2007 regarding the spiral cable read something like this: We have a problem with the spiral cable, we know, it will be a recall. At the moment, we don't know how to fix it. If you're SRS light is 'on', bring your truck to the dealership and we'll replace the spiral cable with a new one of the same, defective spiral cables. Otherwise, sit tight and we'll let you know once we solve the problem. (I paraphrased a bit in case you couldn't tell)

I read that as, if your SRS light isn't on yet, don't worry about it until they get their crap straight and figure out a real fix. If your SRS light is on, take it in and they'll replace the spiral cable but you'll still have to get the updated recall completed once they figure out how to permenantly fix the problem.

The remedy is out. My dealer notified me already that it was the real deal now and I have already gotten it replaced. Just got the letter in the mail from Toyota today stating it found a remedy and to take it in. It's effective on 2005 thru early 2009.

When you had yours replaced, how long did it take them? I want to know if I need to leave it with them, or if I can wait there.

It takes about 1.5 hours I believe. Less if they're fluent.

The letter stated a half hour I believe. Not sure how long it took them to do mine b/c I had them do a couple other things also. (State inspection, brake inspection, etc.)

Watch out. I just had the recall repair down at a dealer. On the way home, the SRS light came on. It was perfectly fine before the repair. I dragged my feet because I am always skeptical about dealer repairs. I kept getting recall reminder and I know if I did not get it repair, it may affect my future sale of the truck. Oh well, back to the dealer.

    Not all cables are impacted.
The trucks with steering wheel audio controls are not covered.
Additionally, only part numbers... I think it was... "R84" through "R88" are impacted.

But... even if your have a cable that is fine, if you have a letter, you'll eventually have to have a dealer document it or it will always be tied to the VIN.

OTOH, if your airbag light is not on, your cable is fine, no urgent need to replace it at this time.
You can leave it until you sell the truck. Get the recall done before selling.
