I'm looking to get into bowhunting/archery. But, I''m looking for some advice, as I have no idea what I'm doing.

Basically, where do I start? I've had a little practice but that was with a few years ago with a broken hand

You need to go to a specialty shop and shoot different bows. Brands and models all differ. Everyone has different preferences. It all comes down to what you like and how much you're willing to spend. $1500 for a bow isn't out of the question these days

Haha fucking rabbits. I go for every jack rabbit I see here. Bludgeon does em dirty. For the one who wants to get into it, like PA said. Go shoot a bunch of different bows and see what you like. You don't have to go expensive, but don't get a used bow. I know there is a lot of pages on here but read it all and itll be worth your while. And if you have any questions regarding what we all wrote I'll be glad to help you out.

Hey now there is nothing wrong with buying use but you need to know what you are looking at and the fair market value of the bow. If you are just starting out and or getting into it buy new. I've had two used bows that have been very very good to me. My wife has two used bows that she got off of archery talk but then again she knew what she wanted and what she was looking at. On the other hand im very against buying used guns go figure. In the case of guns I like to know the history and how its been taken care of. Same logic could be applied to bows. But then again the used bows we bought where a year old and used my very reputible folks for target shooting. I wouldnt buy someones used hunting bow as they tend to get abused quite a bit more then a target bow.

the reason im sayin dont buy used for a begginer is due to the lack of knowledge of what is needed to be done to a bow. ie timing, cables, and so forth. and to get it set up perfectly after buying used, taking it to a pro shop will charge you. so that cheap bow now just cost u. im just saying that cuz i see it time and time again at our shop when im down there.

for me, now that i know enough, and say i wanted an elite hunter, ya id go look for it used. if i had just begun, no.

oh, id NEVER buy a used gun either.

Grinch we are on the same page. For the new guy i wouldnt buy used well unless it was a consignment bow at a reputable shop then its kind of the best of both worlds.

HAHA I cannot believe you missed the same damn one so many times haha. that damn tricky and elusive bastard!

Sorry about being absent so long from TW and this thread...

to the gentlemen getting into archery, go to as many shops and shoot as many bows that are in your price range. If you start shooting bows that cost more you WONT be able to be happy with a lower price range bow. atleast thats what I found. there is a difference between them, NIGHT and DAY lol...

So how are/did everyone's hunts go?! Idk if I am going to be able to get out this season with my D13 tag. My GF's dad is on medical leave with the fire department and can't get caught taking me out.. A little bummed but it'll just give me more practice and get stoked for next season or later on in this one! Haha

I do have a newer question to bring to the table though....

    ...Paper Tuning

Who does it, how, and what advantages you seeing? Been researching a little on this and think it would be a huge benefit to get my arrow flying better! Shooting amazing groups as is but getting everything in tune more cant ever hurt!!!

    Take care all

Ahhh haaaa paper tuning. I have it done when I have my bow set up. It makes sure the arrows are correctly spined for the bow/poundage you are shooting and also helps verify the center shot... that is that you rest and d-loop are properly aligned. I usually dont mess with it after that unless I am having some seriously wacky issues. If you are shooting great groups out to reasonable distances I wouldnt worry about it. If your broadheads are flying like your fields points you most likely dont have an issue. If it aint broke dont fix it.

But if you insist there are plenty of charts out there that will tell you how to interpret the tears in the paper. You should be getting a bullet hole. But that is all dependent on your shooting form. If you are torquing your bow that will effect the arrow so your bow may be perfectly in tune but operator error is causing the funky tears in the paper. Again its up to you but if the bow is shooting good I wouldnt play with it.
