There is a lot of bad information in this thread, and some good. If you are serious about getting a bike, I would look into a Suzuki SV650. They are great bikes with plenty of power (but not too much) that you can pick up cheap. If you want to get rid of it later, they are easy to sell. They have a cult like following like the Taco. Check out www.svrider.com to get some good practical information about good beginner bikes that you wont immediately out grow. I know the site is an "SV" site, but a lot of the guys there don't even ride SV's, its just a good forum.

Your asking the wrong people for advice, that could get you hurt or worse. Buy a 250 ninja learn on that. You can turn around in a year sell it at no lose, and buy the bike you want then. Ps no passangers while learning.

I bought an 04 R6 for a good price. I love it. Not as comfortable as the GSX-Rs,but not bad. Your going to get bored with the 250 very quick especially since I think you said in your first post you have some experience already. Just respect the bike and it's power and you will be fine. Dont be a dumb ass and WEAR GEAR!

    Heres mine....

    I owned a Yamaha FZR6 -
Loved that bike super smooth inline 4 & affordable.
I had my seat customized for more seat comfort for there was none w/ stock seat nor the upber expensive oem comfort seat.
I also added a motech riser, sliders & a removable tail bag.
It was a super fun bike & forgiving.
The only reason I sold it was to buy a dual sport for I do much more dirt road trail riding.

The FZ6 (which is not available new anymore only the FZ8) adds a few more ponies, different frame material & exhaust, less plastic, a little taller stance.
Its seat is more geared to passenger riding.

You can pick either of these bikes used for good prices imo.

my old fz6r the day I sold it

    Google "Gary Jaehne".

I've probably mentioned this before but Gary was a well respected rider, AFM racer, and author. He rode a Ninja 250 for the longest time. Folks were always surprised to see Gary on their asses riding a 250 while they were on 600+ bikes. Sure, you might pull away on the straights with a bigger bike but most of the riding in our area isn't straight line riding.

Riding a 250 all day does take a toll. So does riding on most sport bikes (riding position). Regardless, I'd argue you'll only get bored if you stop learning to ride the bike.

x2... most riders couldn't come close to pushing a 250 to it's limits. The only reason you'd get bored on a 250 is if you want to pull wheelies or just be really really fast. Otherwise, those little bikes are fun as hell. Personally, I have more fun on a little bike I can push the limits on vs. a bigger bike that I can't even open up 2nd gear in on a public road.

My first bike was 2006 GSXR 750, and let me tell you I couldn't enjoy my bike as much cuz it was too much bike for me.
If I could I would start with a 250, get to explore all the gears and get comfortable and then move to a real deal.
You could also start with a 600s like SV600, more comfortable siting position and enough power for double riding.

You could start with a super sport bike but you wont enjoy it as much and you need to really respect the bike to stay away from trouble

I had a Suzuki Bandit 600 (GSF600S) and It has great placement on the foot pegs, a little lower down like a dirt bike riding style which gives you more room if you have longer legs. I'm 5'11" and I could ride that bike all day long and not be in any discomfort. My GF also could sit on the back all day and be happy. The seats were amazingly comfortable.

The Bandit is a sport touring bike, so, really, any "Sport Touring" will have this lower foot peg and comfy seat. I will buy another bandit some day.

As mentioned above, the BMW dual sport is a great option, I have my eyes on an F800GS. But, the money is just too much right now :(

Thank you. Exhaust is Dan Moto cheapy off ebay, but I like it way better than the Two Bros that was on there.

I dont disagree with you. I think a 250 would be fun to have also. They are cheap (price), get great gas milage, and look great. My wife is actually getting a cbr 250 this week hopefully. But for the OP's size and being that he will be riding 2 up with his wife, the 250 is going to be underpowered. I can feel a big difference riding 2 up with my wife on my R6 and she is 5' 1" 115lbs......I was told I should have gotten a 250 also. Im very glad I didnt. I like being able to have the extra power when needed but at the same time I respect the bike and it fits me good.

My .02...OP, if you know anyone with bikes, try to ride them. If not atleast go and sit on a bunch and see what fits you. Get whatever you want and what suits you best. I got a 600 b/c its what I wanted. I just dont go around riding like a jackass and doing wheelies and shit.

Really? Better than two bros? That's a first. My cousin had one on his gixxer and it just growled. But two different bikes. No matter, still looks very nice

Riding 2-up. You're right. But in my opinion, the OP needs to learn to how to ride the bike before even considering two up riding. That's gonna take a year at least and for that time, a 250 would be a great idea.

I have one of these and it is an awesome commuter/beginner/everyone bike but probably not what you are looking for. It is a 2007 BMW G650 X-Country. 650cc single cylinder. (Not my photos below)

The 650cc is a great size and the thumper gives it a lot of low end fun. I do think you could consider a 600 or 650; in the right bike will be a great starter. I also like the suggestion of the 250 Ninja. A buddy of mine has one and it is an all around great bike to ride, plenty of power for a beginner and small and light enough for an experienced rider to have a good time.
