I can imagine. It's fucking stupid that they would make it without a locker, then it's just useless to be lifted.

I have a 2wd. i couldnt justify the extra cost for 4wd at the time i bought the truck. but if i had the option again id go 4x4. never thought id take it offroading, now its all i want to do.

Definitely opinion based, not fact. I have a Prerunner & have not ONCE regretted buying it instead of a 4WD. Where I live is very flat & I do not go wheeling ever (not to say I wouldn't enjoy doing so at some point therefore wanting & needing a 4WD) & for a 2WD truck it's more than capable of taking me where I want to go. Like others have said if you NEED it or WANT it then it's a great thing to have, but most certainly not DUMB if you don't have it. That's a DUMB thing to say period.

Guess that makes 5-lugs dumb too huh ? Just imagine if everyone drove the same exact 4x4 Tacoma, wouldn't TW be pretty boring ? Diversity makes these trucks what they are. Not everyone needs or desires 4WD. This forum isn't called 4x4 TacomaWorld, is it?

I consider myself smart and I chose a 5-lug with zero regrets.

Well just because you don't see a point to it doesn't mean there isn't one. For one thing, some ppl like the look of it being lifted, especially a mild lift such as my own. Also, it does make your vehicle more capable whether your going off pavement & need/want more clearance or your surrounded by deep snow drifts or high water. Maybe we just like sitting up higher in traffic, don't mean we need 4WD. The point is everyone has a preference on how they want their truck to be & regardless if others think it's "dumb" or "pointless" it really does not matter as long as they are happy with it, period. I would indeed like having a 4WD in the future and have NOTHING against them, I just don't need it currently just like many other ppl that own Prerunners on this forum & are very happy with them.

Who's paying for the insurance?..... A 16yo with a 4x4 is gonna be expensive.

Hell, for your first car, you should just be counting your lucky stars they're willing to BUY you something, that you have ANY input on, that's more than a few thousand dollars, that's not a 12yo station wagon or beater grocery getter.

I still don't understand how this is a debate when his parents are footing the bill.

Mom and Dad paying for it = you get what they want you to have, and you thank them.

Not that long ago (2003ish) I was a high schooler in Lilburn, Georgia. I drove a tiny little Hyundai, but I had some friends who had prerunner tacos. One was a 1999 V6 SR5 Access Cab, and the other had a 2001 SR5 Double Cab V6. We never had any problems wheeling in the Lilburn/Stone Mountain areas. We only got stuck when a buddy backed his diff cover on a big rock and lifted the rear wheels off the ground. Back then I wouldn't have spent the money on a 4x4. I had to pay my own insurance, and I could barely afford it on a Hyundai, much less a 4x4 truck. However, now that I live in Nebraska where there is snow on the ground for more than a few hours like Georgia, I won't own anything but a 4x4. It really comes down to what you need. If you plan on wheeling north of Athens or Helen and can afford the insurance, get a 4x4. If you're just going to mess around in the Lilburn/Stone Mountain area get a prerunner. And definitely thank your parents for helping to foot the bill.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
    . . . ^ ^ ^ . . . Enjoy the truck that "they buy" for you ... but when I was 16 y/o ... I needed a bumper car ... and good insurance. Who is paying for the insurance ... big expense & question there ??

If you try to put that vehicle in YOUR name in GA ... if you can get insurance ... it will be a zillion dollars ... especially being a 16 y/o male with 4x4 vehicle.

When my daughter was 21 y/o ... I put a Camry in her name (she had no tickets or wrecks & had honor grades discount). With the minimum GA insurance requirements the price was outrageous. She payed it and learned a giant lesson on vehicle ownership.

When you are young and a male ... the price of the vehicle can be very small compared other vehicle costs .. i.e. .. gas, maintenance, insurance & etc.

Good luck there grasshopper ... :D

PS ... I have had many Toyota trucks and have my first 4x4 in a long time and like it ... but it uses maybe 10% - 15% more gas ... but at 16 y/o ... that will not matter. You might get $2,000.00 more truck in a 4x2 ... since the 4x4 costs more for that ability.

Lots of great advice on this site. Having a 4wd would be nice, definitely...BUT it is not something that you NEED, it would be more of something you WANT. The best bet like said previously in this thread would be to get the best tacoma in the best condition you possibly can, & be thankful that your parents are helping you with the cost in order to get something more dependable. Good luck with your search & enjoy your truck.
