Stop in New Orleans for Bubba Gumps, its good seafood then load back up and keep driving, i stayed in the french Quarter and it was awful. couldn't take it grabbed the truck at 3 am loaded up and went as fast as I can back to TEXAS.

Another good place to eat is the Crescent City Brew house(Had my rehearsal dinner there), It has good food and a good micro brew.

If you want to go to the oldest bar in america and don't mind going int the more eccentric part of New Orleans you should try this place.

    Lafittes blacksmith shop(BAR)

For lodging we stay at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside if we want a cheap room. Its an easy walk to everything.

If you want to be in the French Quarter and at a independedly owned Hotel this one is great(where my family stayed for my wedding).

If you want another nice hotel that is owned by a bigger hotel chain but still has the flavor of NO you can try the Chateau LeMoyne(This is where my wife's family stayed for our wedding, even know they are from there).

I also second the Haunted History tours they are a lot of fun.

Also look into the New Orleans Cocktail tour. This is a blast too, assuming your of age.

The correct answer is "On my feet". You'll know the corresponding question when you hear it.

    Have fun in Nola.

I would stop at Sedona, Bell Rock, or Slide Rock near Flagstaff. Or if in Mesa try tubing down Arizona's Salt River. How about Death Valley? Lake Tahoe by way of hwy395? Maybe go to this years Burnning Man rear Reno.

The question is, how much time do you have?

Some things worth seeing in NM (but are not directly off I-40):
    Rio Grande Gorge Bridge
    White Sands Nat. Monument
    Carlsbad Caverns
Valles Caldera (beautiful scenery - you forget you are in NM)
    Sandia Peak Tramway

There is more.. just depends on how long you have...

I only skimmed the other suggestions, so forgive me if i repeat someone else. Stay away from tourist traps like Emeril's and Harrah's. Central grocery is the place to go if you want a good muffuletta. Try not to stay on bourbon street or you won't get any sleep, but if you want an all night party, the royal sonesta has late checkout and is right on bourbon st. Hit up Pat O's piano bar or Cat's for karaoke. If you are walking down bourbon and see a bar called The Oz you've gone too far and need to turn around or your experience will change real quick. Also, lots of garages there specifically say no trucks, call ahead and double check where you plan to stay. Parking on the street with ANYTHING of value in your car is a bad idea.

Lastly, hurricane Isaac is upon us and they evacuated the city. Hotels will book up fast for recovery crews, so have a backup plan. They will even cancel your reservation For a recovery crew.

    Here's one: Stay away.

Thanks to everyone who sent me suggestions. We had a great time in NOLA!!! People were so friendly, the food was killer, the architecture was amazing, so much to see, it was truly awesome! Cafe du Monde's Beignets and iced coffee was ridiculous, loved the oysters at ACME, ate breakfast at Mother's and so much more! NO has some serious soul and an incredible history...

Also just passed through Houston and ate at Rudy's, fk guys, that bbq was sick!!! You guys were right, thanks again for the suggestions.

On our way up to Santa Fe in the am, lots of driving ahead. I will try to check this if anyone has any good suggestions on what to hit while we are there.

    Aloha!

Thanks! I've been to SF many times but it was years and years ago so I took the names you mentioned as well as the other guys on the NM region. I can't get enough chile verde and sopapillas!

Next stop is Grand Canyon...anymore tips are appreciated! (Food, Lodging, ...etc).
