Laws don't make guns disappear. All of the automatic weapons used in the current Mexican drug war are very illegal there (and here, for most citizens, for that matter). This doesn't stop them from illegally importing them from China, Russia, etc.

We already make it illegal for felons to possess firearms. What kind of "practicable and thoughtful firearms regulations" are you picturing that would fix cartels with millions upon millions of dollars illegally importing arms?

I have purchased and sold firearms person to person in Texas. Here the only real requirement for such a transaction is that the person is a Texas resident and you are not knowingly selling the firearm to someone not legally able to possess one. So as long as someone does not tell me they are a convicted felon, I have no real way of knowing. In and of itself, this is not a problem among friends and family, or in a small community. But in a larger community or gun show, this is a really unnerving way of doing business. Part of what is so uncomfortable is that the strong anti-regulation sentiment among gun enthusiasts makes many upstanding members of the community balk if you even ask for ID at all. If a FFL transfer were mandatory, or greater vetting of buyer expected of sellers, then sellers would be able to simply insist on following the law. But as it is, the law is very permissive, and diligent sellers are put in an awkward situation if they insist on a higher ethical standard in ensuring that they are not doing business with disreputable people.

In short, while "we already make it illegal for felons to possess firearms", we don't make it overly difficult to acquire them.

only modern cartridge ammo firearms and only since the 1968 any felon can walk in and buy a black powder pistol or rifle....the GCA of 1968 is not a longstanding prohibition on felons barring them from possessing a weapon....and if someones served their time in prison then they should not be barred from buying one. If they are too dangerous to have a gun then they should still be in jail....

I partially agree with this statement. I do agree that in theory, but our judicial system is much more effective at administering punishment than rehabilitation and reintegration into society. In many cases, completion of sentence has little correlation with a reinstatement of all rights. And while that is unjust, it is practical given the prison system's tendency to produce repeat offenders. Ultimately, this is one of those issues that confounds us because what is legally, morally/ethically, and ideally supposed to happen frequently clashes with what does.

The reason we have so many repeat offenders is because when you get out you cant get a real job so you have to stay in a life of crime.......

Yes in a CQB situation you are right, nothing like a shotgun to fight with. What if the fight happens outside of your home, standoff distances at 100 yards or more, yeah a shot gun is still deadly at that range with .00 Buck, but the ability to rattle your target with 30 rounds or more if you reload is something that will keep the playing field even.
What I do when I sell to a stranger is force them to produce either a CC or Pistol permit, even on long gun purchases. It is a good CYA. It is standard practice for most people I know around here. If the person has issue with producing either then I will not sell to them. Money is not that important to me that I am willing to be put under investigation or lose my CWP over some nonsense. Sometimes you have to clean your own backyard to keep things the way they are. If you know of shady dealings, by all means report it. If everybody was more proactive in policing the ranks that you identify with we could all get along so much better with eachother.

I think this is on point. I think gun owners need to be proactive in vetting their own ranks. I do not know personally of shady dealings, but I do hear some enthusiast opine that the 2nd amendment obviates the need for scrutiny, in particular when it is applied to them, but more generally as well. As a gun buyer, I am aware that I am acquiring a deadly weapon and expect a measure of scrutiny. Unfortunately, in the absence of regulation, there is a trend toward the lowest common denominator among some. This behavior undermines everyone's safety.

It would break my heart if one of my guns were used in a crime that hurt people. The best way to prevent that is by following the same processes that you would follow at a gun store.

Despite the rhetoric, none have truly resisted when the government came after guns before. For example, the federal assault weapons ban went into effect and numerous states (today & in the past) have banned or partially banned guns, all without substantial physical resistence (no "over my dead body" or similar). Of course, it's not just guns. Our country is going fast, with no real response to that either.

Personally, I don't know what I'd do if the government came after my guns. If I thought there was a possibility of others resisting, I might resist as well. Sadly, I don't have any confidence in that, can't stop the government alone, and certainly have no desire to die alone.
