A-TRAC/TRAC/AUTO LSD Explained (Easy to understand, I hope!)

I think every reasonable person including DK agrees with this. For some reason though folks want to keep arguing something that everybody already agrees with. ATRAC is a good system for what it is you can't argue that it isn't as good as something it was not designed to be. Then to have a bunch of peopl trumpet that because they put a front locker on their 127 inch wheelbase vehicle with a departure angle of 26 degrees they are now in the extreme rock crawling business is laughable. Wait hold on befor we go off the deep end here I am talking about the 05+ doublecabs not a 100,000 rock crawler just in case there. is any confusion
Seriously for a moderately modified doublecab the dimensions are far more limiting in "MANY" offroad situations than having ATRAC vs front locker. But if you have a front locker for that time when you actually need it that's great but for a daily driver some folks save several grand and buy a winch. That's a choice each user must make.

How am i full of false info??? Please tell me. No comment from you on those last 2 videos? If you would have kept your mouth shut initially on how much A-Trac is great and a great alternative to a front locker, there probably wouldnt be such feedback from us on your thread.


So.... until you have ever owned a vehicle or driven a vehicle with a front locker, you should probably keep your opinions on how great A-Trac. I have a Fully Locked Tacoma AND an FJ cruiser (Rear locker, A-Trac) in my family, and the FJ dosent even come close. You only have a stock tacoma, and according to your past testimonial, only ever owned vehicles with rear lockers. Have a good day!!!!

Where are a bunch of people with stock suspension and stock diameter tires trumpeting about their front locker equipped truck?

All I see are a bunch of defensive ATRAC supporters, a bunch of defensive ATRAC detractors, and a bunch of people in the middle who agree that ATRAC is better than nothing, but worse than being locked.

No offense but there must be something in the water in CA.
You just like David missing the rest of the North American continent, muddy mid+south, and snowy north. In both cases that traction system is not only worth $hit but its annoying, and it will get you in trouble more times then will save you. Thats the problem. So just because you guys drive over some dry rocks does not make you an expert on the system. Also what most of you call off roading we call it "commute"
To give you idea, 2wd Hyundai with studded tires goes further then ATRAC ridden junk on regular tires. And I pulled both ..

 

Here we go again...

Some photos of the 'road' I "commute" on where I was in low range with A-TRAC on (other vehicles pictured had lockers, one that didn't had to be pulled). A-TRAC was used without the rear locker as a test, it it proved itself to me on traction over steep, loose rock and fording deep muddy bogs:

The Land Rover that was with me in 2007 did not have lockers, but a traction system like A-TRAC:





Yup, a "commute"... let's see the Hyundai 2WD get out of there!
Only vehicles with lockers or A-TRAC got through the bog (3' deep water/mud). The A-TRAC was flawless then and every other time I put it to use. Do I need to repost the photos of me pulling other Tacomas up grades, again???

Please drop the "commute" and West Coast put downs... You don't see many photos of us in the West on real difficult terrain because we are busy driving or don't have a need to bring others along... The A-TRAC provides all the security I need to go into extreme places and not worry about getting stuck. Toyota gets an A+ for adding A-TRAC to the Tacoma, finally catching up to the years it has been on the Lexus, Land Cruiser, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, etc.

 

David, We all know about your (Like the rubicon trail) trip down there . You have brought it up time and time again. Honestly if thats the hardest trail you have ever been on, you have a lot to learn my boy. That is a cake walk. I could let my little sister drive on it and be fine.

Yes. Front and rear ARB lockers. There was two others also with front and rear lockers. One with rear locker only and one with no lockers who needed to be pulled through the bog. I only used the A-Trac. All six on this run where 4WD.

 

No, it needs to be changed to "Toyota needed to save money, so they came up with a poor excuse of a traction system that anyone who regularly hits trails other than fire roads knows it sucks"
