welcome OP. Some of your gripes I can relate to, and some i cant. The manual transmission could use improvement but, the new 2.7L is a great engine. I've already seen a few with over 200K . The 2TRFE is bulletproof and it will be a legend in time. in my opinion, the 1st gens were a little too small, the 2nd gen's feel just about right. Toyota caters to what the majority want, they don't care about the few.

I used to drive my dads 94 Toyota Pick up which led me to purchase a 2003 Tacoma which got totaled back in 2008 which led me to purchase my current 2005 Tacoma. That's my cool story to the OP. Same great company, same great truck.

I have no grips with the bigger engine, only the bad clutch pedal design and questionable transmission. I really never felt the original engine needed more power. I am fine with the 2004 it gets relatively the same gas mileage. The 2010 is rated with a loss of 2mpg in the city.

Maybe the LED are standard, the 2010 I bought had taillights that looked custom. I looked at 2012 4WD and it did not have the LED or if they were they were behind a solid red taillight lens, the 2010 were clear in the center circle.

Try not to take the content personal its directed to Toyota, not anyone in particular.
I was happy to get a 2010 with only 12k and for 13,500.00 but took it back do to the faulty clutch pedal and the ridiculous whining it did with the slightest engine braking in first gear. It takes a lot to return a purchase of a vehicle, that is what the rant it about I am pointing that all out.

This is a site for Tacoma's dude... You aren't going to find many people who agree or sympathize with you here. My 2nd gen has over 150k miles, still runs like it was brand new, and I intend to keep it for another 100k miles and abuse it like a truck deserves.

2010 with 12000 miles for 13500, that sounds pretty cheap for a 2010?

My suggestion to you is not to use 1st gear when down shifting. Every vehicle i've owned, whined like hell trying to down shift and use engine breaking in 1st gear, even my 1.6L Honda CRX.

The tacomas are still the best built truck out there. I, too, will drive my '09 till at least 250k miles, and i'm sure there will be very little i need to do to it for it to make it that far.

It whined too much, that one had something wrong with it, I have never heard that type of sound, you do not engine brake into first you coast down in second and then shift into first.
But occasionally you are not able the accelerate out of second and down shift sooner to first then it whined and way too loud, probably why it got returned at 12K?

nothing posted so far in response is confidence building, the gen 2 are unproven not old enough to have proven anything as for longevity, ridiculous high mileage on three year old vehicle does not mean the transmission will hold up, that sounds like a way to far of a commute and all highway.

I drive in the city all day and shift allot, bad sycromesh will bring about a transmission rebuild.

The 2nd Gen has been out for 7 years so ask around some of the people who have 2005's with high mileage.

What it comes down to is you're still whining about something that can't be fixed. It's no secret that older vehicles were way over designed in many cases and easier to work on. Those days are over so find a newer vehicle that you are happy with and make the best of it. New vehicles are generally more reliable, more comfortable and safer. I'm sure if you thought about it long enough, you could come up with plenty of things you didn't like about the 1992 back then. Looking back, I'm sure it was the best vehicle ever when in reality, I'm sure it had it's hiccups as well.

Also, with a little research, that annoying dog training beep that you mentioned could have been turned off. There's a relatively simple series of steps that disables the alarms and chimes.

Anybody have 2005 or later with 75,000 or less all city driving? Stop and go and lots of shifting. Because that would tell me that they do not have crappy sycros that burn up.

Do they all whine? I have a 2004 and it does not.

The 2001-2004 have admitted faster then normal rusting frames, Toyota offered a fix they paid for a treatment and extended the rust through warranty on the frame. The only other issue for the 2001-2004 is the squeaky clutch and that’s minor, annoying but minor.

Are all the new manual transmission whining? Is this a new thing I would not know up till now I was stuck with vehicles that never whined. Is there plastic involved in this?
