Why are they telling you the hubs need to be replaced, I dont know why they would ever have to be unless the inner splines were sheared. I am thinking of buying my own hydaulic press so I can do my passenger bearing on my own. I did the drivers side with a buddy's press only to read later that I should have repacked it with better grease so we'll see what happens. The SKF bearing I bought has a 3 year warranty on it. Don't ever let the dealership do that type of work to your truck.Thay are lazy so they want to replace the whole bearing/hub assembly that is just a bolt off/bolt on job that costs you ridiculous amounts of money. Plus I dont know where they even get the whole unit fully assembled anyways.

Every bearing I have purchased for my customers, or myself have always been well packed with bearing grease. I am not saying that there aren't companies out there that don't put enough in it, but I just have never seen it personally. I have heard others talk about there being insufficient grease though in other threads. Maybe it is based on the supplier.

As for why replace the hub itself? Well in some cases, depending on your supplier, you can get a set (bearing, hub, and spindle) for a reasonable price. These hubs develop rust FAST, and the rust is bad for the bearing. Rust is of course oxidization of metal, which means that microscopic parts of the hub are oxidizing and coming off. I'd prefer myself to err on the side of caution and replace the entire unit. Some vehicles, like the unmentionable Nissan equivalent to the Tacoma, do not sell the bearings as a separate part, but as the entire assembly on the newer models.

And Keith, there are no splines on the hub. I am assuming you meant the spindle part of the bearing assembly?

The hub has splines where the cv shaft mates and passes through.

Heres what Timken has to say on the matter. 3rd paragraph. This is also what I've been taught.

IMO that's just packing grease in there.

I had both front hub/bearings replaced on my truck just today by a independent shop with Toyota parts for about $850.

The dealer quoted me a price of $550 for one.

See, this is where talk gets mis informed. The HUB is the outer part that the bearing gets pressed into. The SPINDLE is the part that presses into the center opening of the bearing, and is where the axle shaft splines into it. (also where the wheel studs are located)

So the SPINDLE is what has the splines in it, not the hub.

This is NOT to be confused with the other part called a spindle which is the entire assembly from upper ball joint to lower ball joint. There are different parts with the same name, and unfortunately that is where the confusion begins.

Wrong. Bearing presses into nothing. Bearing is housed in the knuckle or spindle if you have to. There's no longer the type of spindle you're thinking of. You're misinformed.

Why I have a feeling you are talking about white grease that comes from factory?
That's not packed. If you bought original Toyota bearing (came in Toyota box) this stuff is not packed.

I won't argue symantics anymore here. You all feel you are right, and that is fine, but when I order a wheel spindle from my parts store, I get this:

That is how it is listed. As for the hub/bearing, the bearing is the part inside, some are called "fixed" bearings and are not replaceable, hence you get the entire "hub/bearing assembly" Which is this:

If I ask for a knuckle or a suspension spindle, then I get this:

Granted, the newer systems use a one-piece bearing/hub assembly, but that is what it is: The hub AND the bearing as one piece. it is STILL called the hub. But I am sure I will never convince you of that. Oh well. To each his own I guess.

I know you don't want to go at it but as far as toyota is concerned. The upright commonly called a spindle is called a "steering knuckle" and the hub is called a "front axle hub". and when talking about the bearing assembly yes, it's a unit bearing and that's what I'm referring to. The bearing assembly/unit bearing is bolted into the steering knuckle.

Technically there is no spindle on these trucks but the knuckle is commonly referred to as the spindle. We don't have a traditional spindle that the bearings and hub ride on.

    Just saying...

    Cheers,
    -Max
