    Thank you!

You will enjoy having a separate flash, so much you can do with it!

what do you guys think of these two? mainly composition on both but do you think the flash is too strong on the second? it was tough because the sun was under clouds and we were under trees so it was hard to get a good exposure

Can someone explain ISO, shutter speed and what not ? The old ball and chain is the photographer in this house and I want to show her up, not trying to thread jack but a couple of tips would help. Using a Nikon D3100, thanks.

ISO- sensitivity of the sensor. The higher the number the more sensitive of the sensor, but you also get noise. Try stay under 800.

Shutter Speed- obviously the speed of the shutter. The faster the speed you stop motion. Slower the speed you get more motion. You need to have the over the length of the lens. So a 100 mm lens needs at least a 1/100th of a second.

Aperture-size of the opening the let's the light in to hit the sensor. The lower the number (2.8) the bigger the hole, so the more light gets in. Also, you have a shallow depth of field, meaning a person might be in focus but the background will not be. A bigger number (16) the smaller the hole, but a larger depth of field. F/8 is generally the sharpest for the lens

You should scan through the thread. There's a lot of good info that will explain each of these settings. Plus, you'll find examples too ;)

I know there's a lot of stuff to sift through but trust me, it will be worth it.

Any of these worth looking into? I'm not a professional, just a guy that wants to point and shoot and get really good (IMO) quality pictures. Some advanced features would be nice, but I'm mainly after quality to an untrained eye...

I'm planning on taking a long road trip next year and want to get something that can document the journey much better than the crapper I have now.

Personally I would say get a Nikon D3200 and a Nikon 35mm 1.8G lens to go with it. With the D5100 you only get a kit lens and what is now considered "lower" specs than that of the D3200. With the added 35mm 1.8G lens your low light abilities will have increased greatly with the larger aperture. Plus the D3200/35mm 1.8G combo would cost about the same as the D5100. IMO it would be a great starter kit.

As for the Canon items I can't really say much as I have no actual experience with them. But from what I have heard the T3 series has not performed well with ISO compared to just about any Nikon DSLR out there. That's just what I've heard so Canon lovers please don't flame me for this lol.

I would venture to say that ISO would also be considered the ambient light level. ISO 100 would be used outdoors in the daytime. the darker it gets, the higher you raise the iso, to compensate for exposure.

thanks for the info. they have a d3200 for $699, and the "AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G" lens for $200. I haven't checked on the lens, but the camera is the same price on Amazon. anywhere else you recommend to find it cheaper? if not, I'll probably end up getting it anyway.

anyone have anything to add? all opinions and information is appreciated
