    Hey guys,

So I've searched and searched and found some results, but not enough.

    Here's what I have:
    2006 5-speed auto 4.0 *90,xxx miles

My transmission whines in every gear, and in neutral if I rev it. It's pretty loud, and sounds like a supercharger kind of.

Does this happen to anyone else? Is it common? What could it be?

Thanks in advance for any help!

How many miles? Has the transmission fluid ever been changed?

Thanks, just edited. 90,000 miles, and I bought it with 50k on it, certified used. I've never done any service to the tranny...

Toyota changed the service interval for the auto trans from 100k down to 60k. I'd start there.

Also, just for the hell of it, check the power steering fluid level.

Great, thanks for the info, I had no idea!
    What does this service include?

Any have other input? I read it may have something to do with the idler pulleys?

It depends on what you have them do. They can do as little as drain the fluid in the pan and refill. That replaces only about 3 quarts out of 12 (or 14, can't recall which). A full fluid flush will replace all of it, but is going to run between $200 and $300 due to the type of fluid our trucks use.

The reason I asked about the power steering is a low fluid level can make a whining noise as well, especially when turning the wheel.

Ok, I see. Well no, the noise doesn't get louder when turning so I dont think that's it. I think you're on to something with the transmission. Hopefully a fluid refill will help. I still suspect the pulleys though - I've been through some pretty deep mud.

Just my opinion, but this sounds more like a belt or pulley problem. Hence, why the noise is present in neutral when you rev the engine.

If you are low on trans fluid or the filter is plugged the trans fluid pump will cavitate and make noise in any gear, including neutral and park. This will be a whining noise.
