My tire conundrum 265 or 255

Im getting ready to purchase my next set of wheels and am having a hard time deciding which size to get.

265/75/16 Wrangler Duratracs C's or 255/85/16 KM2

Im currently running Hankook ATMs which have served me very well for 35k miles. Also, have one Cooper discover ATP w 6k mi. Im gonna stay away from atp's cause its pretty loud.

I live in Las Vegas which is mostly sharp and hard packed rock wheeling. I rarely get into deep sandy stuff. I also frequent the snow in the winter time. Not really off roading, but snow covered roads and highways. Overall, my truck is used 80% on road so mpg's is really important, thats why im staying away from 285's. I wanna to do mojave rd and moab in the future. I like the clearance and agressiveness of 255's.

Ive read most of the 255 threads but it seems to be compared to 285's for the most part.

I have 255/75/17 BFGoodrich KM's (not KM2's) on my 4Runner and absolutely love them. Little to no highway noise and they perform awesome offroad. My last set of tires were 265/70/17 Firestone Destination MT's and I have no complaints about. Just so you know, the 255/85/16 measures out to be a 33.1" tire while the 265/75/16 is a 31.6" tire. Something to think about depending on what kind of lift you are running

 

x2 assuming you are looking at similar load range tires. Plus the Duratracs seem to have a better reputation in the snowy regions. If you get the KM2's, make sure you get them siped if you plan to use them in the snow.

Seems like folks are avging 16 mpg w/ 255. Im currently getiing 18 mpg w 265's.

 

I get better MPG's with my 255's over my 265's.

 

What??? How is.the uphill hwy power??

 

Less rolling surface area and my 265's weighed 63 pounds a piece as compared to my new ones which are around 45-50 I think

 

Yeah, but im also running 255/75's not 255/85's. My tires are 32.1" as opposed to 31.6"

 

He has 255/75/17 , not 255/80/17

 

So 255/85 burns a little more.

 

and you need a 2 1/2" lift

My vote is 255/85/16 then

 

Now to find the best price on them......
