I'm a post-VN guy. Graduated HS in '73 and was the last year to get a sequence number - and hit at #65. That year the classified anyone under #100 so I went 1A but they never drafted anyone. Went to college and then into ROTC.

As part of the war college experience, they take you on a trip overseasto meet with diplomats and military from other countries - I ended up going to Vietnam and Thailand. Spent 7 days in Hanoi and then 3 in Ho Chi Minh City - Saigon. That was in '99. Quite an experience.

Morning all...welcome back Mark:wave:...sounds like you've been busy and with the start of the school year upon you to boot...Good luck and congrats on your new career...

I was one of the lucky ones..all east coast duty 67 to 71...met plenty of guys that were in Nam and was quite shocked at the treatment they got from the VA as well as the draft card bra burning draft dodgers...thank God our men and women today are getting the respect and recognition they deserve, but it's the same story with the politians calling the shots and we always lose lives for some other country that don't give a rats ass bout us...:rant::rant:just the money we send there to "help them on their road to democracy" what a joke...can't feed or take care of the people in our country but we are spending billions in other countries...sorry for the rant...Ken

Morning all: X2! Pathetic that alot of people, that were never in the military, are getting more entitlements than the ones that really deserve them.

Who said; It's not what you can do for your country, it's what your country can do for you! (the reverse of the quote)
Why should I work when I can get a free ride, and there's way too many free rides anymore!

Here's a tidbit: 30% of medicare is spent on 5% of recipients, during the last year of life.
Wonder where that's heading for! PULL THE PLUG!!!!!!

Morning everyone! Nice weekend, weather-wise - ahead. Grass to cut as usual.

I think my restored 1942 Soviet Izhevsk ex-sniper will be delivered by FedEx today. I've got an original '42-made scope for it in my safe.

I'm also planning on doing some reloading this weekend! And some shooting. Woo Hoo!

Actually, the bores are typically still OK. Almost all went through a post war refurb and then into storage for the future. For the most part, any with bad bores were scrapped or rebarreled.

They are used often in vintage sniper competitions at yardages between 300 and 1000 yards with solid accuracy (target hits as opposed to scored bull). The PU scpes are a fixed 3.5X.

I have 3 of them now. The one I'm getting today is what is known as an ex-sniper - asniper that was restored back to a standard infantry rifle after the war as the reduced the number of sniper rifles they held. The scope rail holes were filled and welded, botls changed back to straight and stocks replaced. I had it restored to sniper configuration by one of the true experts with them - George Tossan. Beyond the basics of turning down the bolt, tapping the holes and mounting the rail and inletting the stock, he also floated and polished the barrel, bore and feed ramp, lapped the bolt for smooth cycling and adjusted the trigger to a smooth 5lb pull. MN triggers are notoriously quirky except for the snipers.

I'll post some pics after I get it today!

Afternoon all: As usual, enjoying the pics. and interesting chit chat.

    Mark; don't miss! Good luck!

A guy came up to set up the furnace. It has to be better than before. I cleaned it, and took 3 bags of black soot out of it and the chimney; NOT GOOD. It was cleaned and set up last fall. At least he showed me how to do it, and now I have the service manual for it.
I need to buy a Bacarach test kit, and know the pump pressure, to set it up.
That kit is $550-$650, but maby can find a good used one. There's a used one on CL (williamsport PA) for $350 OBO.

Nobody ever did what is required to set this furnace up, now I know why it was heavily sooted yr. after yr.

Wow, Jim, that IS a sweet looking rifle! I'd love to have that one, too!

Got my reborn sniper back late this afternoon - lickily I checked the tracking 'cause the Saturday FedEx driver doesn't know the route and put an address exception on it. I caught it in time to call and get him on the phone to give him directions. Otherwise, it would have been Tuesday until I got it.

The restoration guru did a fantastic job on it. Plus, it is now tweaked for competition.

Here it is in ex-sniper form. It is a 1942 Soviet Izhevsk Mosin Nagant 91/30.

And here she is now back to her original form - and sporting an original 1942 Progress scope.

Standard Infantry Mosin Nagant 91/30s can be had for $80 to $120 all over the place. They are all refurbished and are fun to shoot. And, you can get MILSURP ammo for less than $90 for 440 rounds. Youcan't beat that!! :)

Nice one 6the look's like a good going over was done. want a big smile put 10 rounds out it and smell the bolt with your eyes closed you can tell the age..

They were a bear to pack, The only reason I got one was no packing just from the truck down to the boat. A grunt had turned it in that day for a AR15. Gunners mate said they were hard to come by, USMC sniper grade. Cleaned it good that night and put 100 rounds out her the next day. Was pure love for the next 27 mo.s. She knew how to take the other boys beer $.... Jim

Morning, all! I got all of the grass cut yesterday - just a few small projects to do today and then I get to play!! I'm going to dome some re-loading and shoot that reborn sniper.
