With all due respect, calm the fuck down asshead.
If you want to wheel, the uwharrie is the closest place to us. Croatan is illegal, and will net you a $150 ticket. That was two years ago when I helped pull my friend out, I'm sure it's gone up by now. You can go drive on the outer banks, take your fishing rods and relax.

Other than that, it's going to take a bit of driving. There is a place south of wilmington a little bit, mostly mud trails, but a small rock garden. I've gone up to Va a couple times on 72's and had a great time in the GWNF. About 8 hours to get there, but well worth it.
Check out NC4x4.com to find out all the other legal areas around us. Yes, Havelock is a shit hole, no need to throw a fit about it. Just fill up the gas tank and leave the local area.

I've been thinking of organizing a base off road club, if youre interested, pm me. Anyone in your unit into off roading? Doesn't matter the vehicle, it will be open to all. With the club, I want to set up a web site for information and discussion, plus do a monthly meeting. Might just be dinner at bdubs or something, but preferably try and plan a trip for at least every other month. Get out there, wheel, camp, drink, and meet others on the base who share our hobby.

Ive got orders to LeJeune early 2013. i was hoping the off road situation was better then FL. there is a few trails here, but mostly mudd and water, nothing technical or overly challenging. i hate playing in the mudd so thats a no go for me.

im from GA and used to challenging and technical forest roads, washouts, hill climbs etc. Just a pain in the ass the little bit of places i find here i have to take a looooooong drive. i was hoping NC was better :(

Theres great wheeling in NC...it just happens to be on the opposite side of the state. I'm always down for a road trip, so anyone feel free to hit me up if you want to head out somewhere.

^Correct, the coast is nothing but mud, sand, water and flatland. There are places you just have to talk to the locals. But yea the foothills are a good place for hilly trails and stuff.

I finished up my service and have returned to my home state. I do miss it out there ever now and again though. There was a little place I use to get turkey raps down town New Bern and nobody else makes them quite as good

i spent 9 years at Lejeune... no good wheeling out there unless you drive the few hours out to the foothills like everyone has said. After spending the last 3 and a half years in the Sierras I'll be sad to be back in NC as far adventuring goes.

Cali... as in pendleton or 29 Palms... meh. But up here where I'm at is awesome, snow, 12,000' peaks, wildlife. You can't beat it! best kept secret in the Marine Corps.

Yeah I'm in new Bern and other than the Croatian trails which are just gravel roads there really isn't anything we've found.

Is there any local group? I'm the black lifted 4dr taco, seen a couple Tacomas here n there.

I don't know of any local groups... I might have seen you around cherry point. I'm typically in croatan a lot but like you said it's just gravel.

I just came from wheeling at Brown Mountain, NC and that was fun. I might try the beach this weekend. Also there's an event that's going on in Gulches, SC in March. There's a thread on that on TW. Also I might go to URE too.

LMK if you want to hang out one day...

That doesn't surprise me not a lot going on around here.
We did actually find one decent trail in the south end of the Croatian but it ends at a deep creek and massive downed tree.

Only prob with the beach is ya need to take the ferry which is pretty pricy. Unless there are some spots down there I don't know of

How was brown mnt? We were thinking of going there, blowing rock, n the dirt devil trail in tn. I've heard there's some awesome trails in the nc tn mountains just knowing which ones is the hard part

You're right about the price of the ferry, but from what I hear, Atlantic Beach is drivable during this time of the year. Also, Carolina Beach down by Wilmington can be driven and camped on. And last but not least. corolla, NC is also another place to offroad on the beach. I'm probably going to hit one of these up in the near future.

Brown Mnt. was cool. We enjoyed it, you don't need to have any crazy aftermarket parts... I'll post a video.
