5100 Rears (boot up or down?)

Well I am about ready to install my rear 5100's. I have seen a thread (cant find it now) where the guy installed his with the boot up, and others commented on it that it was upside down. I have always thought they we supposed to be boot up? Dose it matter which way they go or is there any benefit to either way? Thanks guys!

 

With 2nd Gens there is no option, it's boot up. That might be for a reason

 

Thanks, Yeah im assuming they should be boot up. Although they have a boot it would help keep the road grime/mus/snow from getting to it as easily.

 

It does not matter.
However, bilstein text on the shocks indicate it is right side up when the shaft is on the bottom.

I've ran mine shaft down forever and have never had an issue.

Yeah, I did notice the stickers were that way. I just wantet to be sure before I stick them on.

 

I decided to put them boot up.

 

Boot down is technically better, less chance of mud sitting on the seals. Also if it matters (it doesn't) there is less unsprung weight with the shaft pointing down.

 

Not saying your wrong at all, bc other shock manufactures could be different but I was hesitant to put boot down on mine even tho the logo is upside down bc a friend of mine put his boots down and kept on blowing out his seals. The reason he mounted them upside down is the exact reason you just stated. After 2 shocks under warranty the manufacture finally asked what way he was mounting them . He told them and they said that is why they are blowing out. I believe that was a pro comp lift and it was on a full size pick up. If billstein says to mount the 5100s boot down I may switch mine. Kinda torn.

 

FWIW, I did mine a couple weeks ago and went boot-up. Figure there's less chance for something to snag/tear the boot up there.

Had to argue with my buddy who kept saying boot down because of the way the sticker was stick on the shock.

 

If the sticker says boot down, you might want to do that or risk voiding your warranty. Probably wouldn't happen, but sometimes all a manufacturer needs is a reason.

 

Boot up or boot down, all depends on the particular shock and part #. Bilsteins should be installed so that the sticker and writing on the shock is right side up for proper compression/rebound valving.
