Look for National Forest or Bureau of Land Management lands. They typically allow some sort of open camping in certain areas. Best way to get away from the yahoos you find in designated camp grounds.

I'm not a professional camper by any means, but my wife and I got started by buying a book titled "The Best In Tent Camping: Missouri". The author did a great job of finding and rating the best campgrounds around. He listed the amenities, activities as well as rating each one for privacy, space, security... Not only that but he would list which campsites in each campground were the best. I see that there is a book by the same publisher for Oregon. Different author, but I suspect it will have similar details. Pick up a copy and see where it leads you. Oh, and Craigslist is a GREAT way to invest very little $ in this hobby...at least until you know you really like it.

Our last camping trip was to Markham Springs, MO...one of the campground listed in the book:

Although taken last year - at Red Bridge Campground in Granite Falls, WA - I have been out once (soaked) and will be headed out this coming weekend -- will post pics since it is supposed to be nice...since then I have a new tent - bigger - and a few things done to the truck!!

^ I just called AutohomeUSA this past Monday about a Medium Airland and they said they have a ship coming in on sep. 5th. Ive been thinking about getting one if these or an Eezi Awn to replace my ARB. The wife thinks the maggiolinas are ugly so I don't know if that's going to happen or not. Nice rig!

Thanks! I was originally planning to go with a Columbus, but they didn't have what I wanted in stock at the time and I didn't have time to wait. I originally thought the Maggiolina looked boxy, but after using it for two years now, I realize just how sturdy this thing is. Once it's up it's very solid and I have no problem believing it can withstand a ton of wind.

I don't know if you've ever been to their Italian home site, but they show a lot more verisons than the US site does. I've never asked if there's a reason for this, but might be worth the call to find out if there's a setup there that your wife might like better. Of course if it was a special order, it might take months to get too. Warning: watch the volume on your computer before clicking the link because they have some surprisingly loud background music on the homepage-

    http://www.autohome.it/file_gb/index_gb.html

Also, as far as looks, I've been mulling over whether to have a body shop color-match the tent shell to my truck. I know I'd like the look, but I also know that making it darker would make it hotter inside the tent when it's in the sun.

Thanks! I like the idea of being fully self-contained for transport (no trailer), but also versatile once on-site. If I have room to spread out like this I can, but can also just run one side or the RTT itself with no side attachments.
